Obama to promote fiscal cliff plan with Va. family

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is showcasing a northern Virginia family to highlight his call for extending current tax rates to all but the top 2 percent of earners.

Obama wants to keep up pressure on Republicans as a year-end deadline for avoiding a so-called fiscal cliff of tax increases and spending cuts draws near. He will travel to a Virginia suburb of Washington on Thursday.

Obama spoke with Republican House Speaker John Boehner on Wednesday, signaling the possible start of fresh talks to avoid the fiscal cliff.

Despite the entreaty, Obama was not cutting back on a public campaign to pressure Republicans into accepting rate hikes for wealthier Americans. Republicans say they are willing to raise revenues but want to do it by closing loopholes and limiting deductions on the rich.

Geron ends brain cancer drug study, cuts 43 jobs

MENLO PARK, Calif. (AP) ? Geron Corp. shares tumbled 21 percent in after-hours trading Monday after the company said that it will end development of an experimental cancer drug and eliminating 43 jobs.

The company will stop working on GRN1005, a drug that was designed to deliver a chemotherapy agent to the brain to treat brain tumors. It is also terminating its licensing agreement on that drug. Geron said it decided to stop development of GRN1005 based on an unsuccessful analysis of a mid-stage clinical trial. The company also said it was unable to enroll patients in a lung cancer trial.

The company will cut 40 percent of its staff, which will leave it with 64 employees. Geron expects to have about $33 million in cash operating expenses in 2013, down from $65 million in 2012. Expenses include $3 million in restructuring costs and $3 million in costs related to the discontinuation of clinical trials. The company said it will have about $90 million in cash and investments at the end of 2012.

Geron shares rose 7 cents, or 5 percent, to close at $1.48. The stock has lost about half its value since early September on setbacks for imetelstat. In aftermarket trading Geron shares lost 31 cents, or 21 percent, to $1.17.

Geron said it will continue studying its drug imetelstat as a treatment for blood cancers and certain types of tumors. In September Geron said imetelstat would not meet its goals in studies involving breast and lung cancers.

The company said it will report promising results from a study of imetelstat on Dec. 9. Based on those results, Geron said it is studying the drug as a treatment for myelofibrosis and will conduct studies in other hematologic cancers in 2013.

The company pioneered the development of embryonic stem cell therapies and ran the first human trials of treatments based on embryonic stem cells. However in 2011 the company ended a trial of a stem cell therapy for spinal cord injuries and said it would focus on its cancer drugs.

Post-divorce journaling may hinder healing for some | Health ...

Following a divorce or separation, many people are encouraged by loved ones or health-care professionals to keep journals about their feelings. But for some, writing in-depth about those feelings immediately after a split may do more harm than good, according to new research.

In a study of 90 recently divorced or separated individuals, psychological scientist David Sbarra of the University of Arizona and colleagues found that writing about one?s feelings can actually leave some people feeling more emotionally distraught months down the line, particularly those individuals who are prone to seeking a deeper meaning for their failed marriage.

The findings, forthcoming in Clinical Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, came as a surprise to Sbarra, who initially set out to compare the effectiveness of two different styles of expressive writing on the emotional healing of recently separated or divorced individuals.

?There are very few known interventions to promote adjustment and healing after marital separation,? said Sbarra. ?So our basic starting point was that we need experimental data on how to improve people?s lives and how to promote wellness after this difficult event.?

Sbarra studied individuals who had physically separated from a spouse on an average of three months before the start of the study. After completing an initial assessment to determine their emotional baseline, participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups. Members of one group were asked to write about their feelings about their relationship through traditional expressive writing. Another group was asked to practice a technique known as narrative expressive writing ? to write about feelings but within the framework of a narrative with a beginning, middle and end, effectively telling the story of the marriage. The third, the control group, was instructed to simply keep a journal of basic daily activities, without writing about emotions or opinions.

The participants were asked to write in a journal, using their prescribed style, for 20 minutes a day for three consecutive days. Eight months later, their emotional state was re-evaluated in a follow-up assessment.

The goal was to see if those who practiced narrative expressive writing would experience greater healing benefits than those assigned to do traditional expressive writing.

The unexpected results suggest expressive writing of any kind can actually hinder emotional recovery for certain individuals, whereas non-expressive control writing might actually be a more effective intervention.

This was found to be true specifically among those labeled in the initial assessment as ?high ruminators? ? those with a tendency to brood over the circumstances of their separation in search of answers.

?At the eight-month follow up period, high ruminators actually reported the least distress in the control condition, suggesting that control writing for these people may actually be the beneficial thing,? Sbarra said.

Although not what he expected, Sbarra says the study?s findings make sense in retrospect.

?These are people who are essentially searching for meaning in their experience or who have a tendency to ruminate on their experience, brood on their experience and go over it and over it and over it again,? he said.

?If a person goes over and over something in their head, and then you say, ?Write down your deepest darkest thoughts and go over it again,? we will intensify their distress,? he said.

Further research is needed, Sbarra said, to measure whether non-expressive control writing provides healing benefits over not journaling at all. But he can imagine how journaling about mundane tasks might be helpful to some.

?If you?re someone who tends to be totally in your head and go over and over what happened and why it happened, you need to get out of your head and just start thinking about how you?re going to put your life back together and organize your time,? Sbarra said. ?Some people might naively call this avoidance, but it?s not avoidance; it is just re-engagement in life, and the control writing asks people to engage in this process.?

Those in the study identified as ?low ruminators? ? those not brooding over their marital separation ? had similar emotional outcomes regardless of what type of writing style they were assigned.

Sbarra is quick to note that expressive writing has proved in numerous studies to be an effective intervention for individuals who have experienced stressful life events, and it should not be discounted. However, his recent findings suggest it may not be the best approach universally.

?I think many, many therapists have a tendency to believe that journaling unequivocally is a good thing to do, especially when people are trying to figure things out in their head,? he said.

?This study is important because it challenges our notions about what might be the thing to do to promote healing after a divorce,? he said. ?It makes us reconsider the things we do to try to put our lives back together.?

Co-authors on the study include Adriel Boals of the University of North Texas and Ashley Mason, Grace Larson, and Matthias Mehl, all of the University of Arizona.

Islamists rally to support Egypt's president

CAIRO (AP) ? Tens of thousands of Islamists waved Egyptian flags and hoisted portraits of President Mohammed Morsi in rallies nationwide Saturday to support his efforts to rush through a new draft constitution despite widespread opposition by secular activists and some in the judiciary.

The demonstrations ? the largest turnout of Morsi supporters since he came to office in June? were seen as a test of strength for Islamists seeking to counteract mass opposition protests denouncing the president's decision to seize near absolute power and the fast-tracking of the draft charter by an Islamist-led assembly ahead of a Constitutional Court decision on Sunday on whether to dissolve the panel.

Morsi says he acted to prevent courts led by holdovers from Hosni Mubarak's ousted regime from delaying a transition to democracy. But his decision last week to put himself above judicial oversight has plunged the country into turmoil and mobilized an increasingly cohesive opposition leadership of prominent liberal and secular politicians ? a contrast to the leaderless youth uprising last year that toppled Mubarak.

The Muslim Brotherhood organized Saturday's protests a day after the opposition in a bid to avoid conflict and violence after days of street skirmishes between protesters from both sides.

"The people support the president's decision!" chanted crowds outside Cairo University, where tens of thousands had gathered by midday. They held posters that read "Yes to stability" and "Yes to Islamic law."Protests in other parts of Egypt were expected to also attract large crowds in the evening. The rallies were dubbed "Shariyya and Shariah," Arabic for "legitimacy and Islamic law."

Members of the assembly, who wrote the charter and approved it in a 16-hour long voting session it just after dawn Friday, were expected to hand to Morsi the final draft later Saturday. The president is then expected to set a date for a nationwide referendum on the document, possibly in mid-December.

The speeding of the constitutional draft through the assembly, despite a boycott by secular and Christians, was seen as an attempt to circumvent a legal challenge that threatened to dissolve the panel and delay the charter.

The assembly, which worked on the draft for months, has been marred by dispute, with liberal, secular and Christian members quitting in protest of what they call the Islamists' hijacking of the process.

The constitutional court ruled in June to dissolve parliament's Islamist-dominated lower chamber on grounds that the law governing the elections didn't provide equal opportunities for candidates, and it was ruling on the constitutional assembly on Sunday.

It's not clear, though, what the standing of the court's ruling would be since Morsi granted himself near absolute powers last week that deemed his decisions above judicial oversight.

The Islamists point to the fact that Morsi was Egypt's first freely elected president and argue that the liberals and activists do not represent the vast majority of Egyptians.

Ibrahim Galal, a 21-year student, said Tahrir protesters are mobilized largely by members of the old regime who are in opposition to Morsi.

"If it's about numbers, we too can mobilize. Let the ballot box speak. Not everyone can speak for the people," he said.

"Why are you afraid of the (ballot) box!" chanted crowds in the pro-Morsi rally Saturday.

Tens of thousands of Morsi supporters gathered in Cairo but stayed away from the central Tahrir Square, the birthplace of the anti-Mubarak revolution and the site of the opposition protests, drawing up to 200,000 people on Friday, vowing to bring down the draft constitution and demanding Morsi repeal his decrees. Some judges groups have announced strikes until the decrees are repealed.

In the northern Mediterranean city of Alexandria, hundreds of riot police were deployed to create a buffer between several thousand pro and anti-Morsi protesters, who had clashed Friday.

Near Cairo University, dozens of Brotherhood buses stood parked after transporting people from outside the capital to the rally. Thousands others arrived on foot, chanting in support of Morsi as they marched.

"Our message to seculars and liberals... this is the real million-man protest," said ultraconservative Salafi Nour Party leader Yasser Borhani to the crowd in Cairo atop an erected stage.

The Brotherhood had originally said it would hold Saturday's rally in Tahrir but changed the location to avoid confrontation. The group said it canceled its rally in the southern city of Luxor after clashes between rival camps broke out there Friday.

Clashes sparked by the two-week old crisis have left two dead and hundreds injured.

The rival street demonstrations highlight the sharp divisions in Egypt nearly two years after the uprising that united and galvanized much of the country to oust Mubarak.

The Brotherhood and more conservative Islamists came out the biggest winners, securing nearly 75 percent of the seats in last winter's parliamentary election before the body was dissolved by a court ruling. But liberals highlight the fact that Morsi, the Brotherhood's candidate, won only 25 percent of votes in the first round of presidential elections. He went on to win the runoff by just over 50 percent, after a divisive race against a former regime figure.

The opposition is considering a number of options, including boycotting the referendum, an intensified street campaign of protests and civil disobedience. Some acknowledge that the opposition does not have enough time or reach to launch a campaign to encourage people to vote against the charter in time.
