Breast Cancer Reconstruction With Implants

Posted by Aloysius Aucoin on 1/01/13 ? Categorized as Health and Fitness

After struggling through breast cancer reconstruction is a way to regain something that was lost. Deciding to undergo a mastectomy is not always easy. Despite it being the safest option is some situations, women often find that they lose some of their self-confidence and struggle with the changes made to their bodies. Implants help restore this area of the body right away.

The Benefits

Taking care of a breast cancer reconstruction at the same time as a mastectomy has several benefits. It prevents a patient from receiving a large scar that tends to be disfiguring. Even if a decision to change is made at a later date, the scar is still there and cannot always be covered up. When the tissue is removed and something is available to take its place right away, there is a possibility of saving some of the area, skipping over a complete removal, and avoiding two separate operations.

Mentally, an immediate fix tends to be beneficial. After having gone through breast cancer reconstruction means never having to live without this portion of the body. While it may look and even feel a little different that it did before, there is something there to replace what was removed. Immediately a woman gains some of her self-confidence back and is able to deal with the loss in a different way.

The Negative Aspects

Unfortunately, implants are not a perfect solution that will work well for every woman. Most individuals notice right away that the look and texture of the chest is not exactly like the natural tissue. There is a noticeable difference. If only one side is undergoing a mastectomy, it can be difficult to match up the two sides of the body to achieve symmetry.

Just like any other augmentation that utilizes implants, there is a chance that one will rupture or deflate. When this happens, it is important to go back in to see the surgeon and figure out a solution. Saline implants tend to be absorbed by the body but other fillers could cause complications. There is also a chance that the wound will not heal properly. When this happens, the area is left damaged and will need to be repaired by a surgeon. Some women also experience numbness in the area or begin to notice the area becoming misshapen.

There are various options available to women looking into breast cancer reconstruction. Aside from using implants, there are ways to take tissue from other parts of the body and transplant it into the chest. Each woman needs to look at all of the options and work with her surgeon to determine which one will work best for her specific situation.

There are many options with breast cancer reconstruction after a mastectomy. A qualified surgeon can help you make the right decision: http://www.breastcenter.com.

Al-Jazeera in talks to buy Current TV

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Al-Jazeera, the Pan-Arab news channel that has struggled to win space on American cable television, is negotiating to buy Al Gore's Current TV and with it, access to 60 million U.S. homes, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Talks about the pending deal were confirmed by a person familiar with the matter. The person was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. The deal was earlier reported by The New York Times.

The acquisition could extend Al-Jazeera's reach beyond a few large U.S. metropolitan areas, where some people can watch Al-Jazeera English.

The network's managing director, Tony Burman, in 2010 blamed a "very aggressive hostility" from the Bush administration for reluctance among cable and satellite companies to show the network.

Al-Jazeera has attracted respect for its ability to build a serious news product in a short time. But there may be a culture clash at the network. Dave Marash, a former "Nightline" reporter who worked for Al-Jazeera in Washington, said he left the network in 2008 in part because he sensed an anti-American bias there.

Current, meanwhile, began as a groundbreaking effort to promote user-generated content. But it has settled into a more conventional format of political talk television with a liberal bent. Gore worked on-air as an analyst during its recent election night coverage.

Former New York Gov. Elliot Spitzer, former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm and Cenk Uygur are currently its lead personalities. Current signed Keith Olbermann to be its top host in 2011 but his tenure lasted less than a year before it ended in bad blood on both sides.

Current has largely been outflanked by MSNBC in its effort be a liberal alternative to the leading cable news network, Fox News Channel.

Current hired former CNN Washington bureau chief David Bohrman in 2011 to be its president. Bohrman has pushed the network to innovate technologically, with an election night coverage that emphasized social media conversation.

Current TV, founded in 2005 by former vice president Gore and Joel Hyatt, is expected to post $114 million in revenue in 2013, according to research firm SNL Kagan. The firm pegged the network's cash flow at nearly $24 million a year.

96% Sister

All Critics (51) | Top Critics (15) | Fresh (49) | Rotten (2)

"Sister" avoids sentimental indulgence. There's no room for wallowing in this spare, almost ascetic exercise ...

French-born director and co-screenwriter Ursula Meier balances the scenario's bleak, wrenching aspects with a stirring confidence in the redemptive power of love.

Seydoux perfectly captures the anger and self-defeat of ill-educated, hedonistic, man-chasing young women who live on the fringes.

L?a Seydoux fulfills Louise, and Kacey Mottet Klein, as Simon, is one more to join the pantheon of film's excellent child actors.

Haunting and sad. And absolutely worth seeing.

The chemistry between the two leads is a razor's-edge dance: feral, childish, tender and always complex.

We come away relieved and somehow chastened, the same way we might feel after having our pocket picked by a true artist.

The storytelling is exciting and the characters well-observed.

For the most part a distant film, Sister supplies a full behavioral experience that's riveting at times, with lead performances by Lea Seydoux and Kacey Mottet Klein communicating isolation in bravely vulnerable ways.

Emotionally engaging and impeccably crafted

Klein and Seydoux give such naturalistic performances that they're never overwhelmed by the spectacle.

"Sister" is loose and episodic, but held together with nicely sketched characters.

[A]voids bathos. . .reveals unexpected depth in a heartbreaking bond. . . Different classes conflict [in] adjacent spaces . . .in spare, realistic Dardennes' style.

Meier draws out wonderfully naturalistic performances from her young stars, with Mottet Klein particularly good as the young roustabout Simon ...

It comes over like a subtle short story and is well acted.

Meier's portrait of Simon ... is richly atmospheric and never sentimental.

An enigmatic, heartfelt account of a vulnerable young boy's yearning for a better life.

Most intriguing is how the writers and director have transformed what's essentially a rather dark, bleak story into something involving and emotionally resonant, all without ever turning sentimental.

It is an interesting and well-made movie, though with an uncertain ending.

Sister gradually reveals pattern in its tapestry of everyday life.

An expert piece of storytelling with a host of strong character turns and thematic depth to burn.

Cyborg cockroach obeys your tweets

18 hrs.

Devin Coldewey , NBC News

An artist outfitted a cockroach with a special high-tech backpack that allows its movements to be controlled ? by anyone. Anyone on Twitter, that is. For a period,?eager tweeters were able to direct the roach's behavior with nothing more than a few keystrokes.

The backpack is a modification of a RoboRoach kit, which you can buy for $100 from Backyard Brains. It essentially replaces the natural electrical?signals from the roach's antennae with signals provided by a circuit board. The user gives the cockroach the impression that?one of its antennae has been touched, so it moves in the opposite direction. (The "surgery" to implant it is interesting, but not for the squeamish.)

Brittany Ransom, an artist based in?Dallas, Texas, added a new feature: A Twitter account. During short, designated times, people can tweet at the?@TweetRoach?account?with a special hashtag that?sends a signal to the backpack, telling the cyber-roach to go in the direction indicated. In order to preserve the roach's insectile sanity, commands only come every 30 seconds, no matter how frequent the tweeting is.

But this isn't just?some form of?wanton cruelty directed at everyone's least favorite bug. The goal of the project is to explore whether the creature could learn to ignore the frequent and confusing instructions being sent by the backpack, and cease being controlled at all.

Ransom notes on the project page that more information about the project and her custom roach rig will be available soon.
