Ford, GM vehicles made in Kansas City rev sales

Vehicles produced in Kansas City by Ford Motor Co.?

Ford?s Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo manufactures the Ford Escape SUV and Ford F-150 pickup.

December sales of the Escape reached 25,574, up 36.8 percent from the same month last year. For the year, Escape sales rose 33.1 percent to 254,293.

The Ford F-series ? which includes the F-150 ? remained the best-selling vehicle in America, with 68,278 sold in December, up 24.4 percent from a year earlier. For the year, there were 584,917 sold, up 10.7 percent from 2010.

Overall Ford sales rose 11 percent in 2011.

?The year finished on a high note, with industry sales momentum strengthening as the year came to a close,? Ken Czubay, a Ford vice president, said in a release.

GM's Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, Kan., manufactures the Chevrolet Malibu and Buick LaCrosse cars.

GM sold 13,034 Malibus in December, up 13.1 percent from a year prior. For the year, Malibu sales rose 3 percent to 204,808.

LaCrosse sales hit 5,360 in December, up 4.3 percent from the same month in 2010. However, full-year sales fell 4.4 percent to 58,474.

Overall, GM sales rose 13 percent in 2011.

?Over the course of the fourth quarter of 2011, clear signs emerged that U.S. consumers are more confident and that other underpinnings of our economy are either stable or slowly improving,? Don Johnson, a GM vice president, said in a release. ?When we add improving economic fundamentals to pent-up demand and an aging vehicle fleet, it?s now clear that auto sales should continue to grow in 2012, barring a shock to the system.?
