Card games ? having fun at home

People?s most famous relaxation and amusement method over the centuries is also represented by the diversified range of card games, which date back to the 9^th century, being known for the first time in the Far East, during the Chinese Tang dynasty. As we all know, a normal deck of cards contains 54 cards among which 2 are called ?Jokers?. The rest of the cards are divided into groups of four, having written on the front side numbers from 2 to 10, and in addition, other 4 special markings: Jack, Queen, King and Ace. To render them unique, there are also 4 different types of cards: hearts, spades, clubs and diamonds.

All games differ depending on the region, culture and from person to person and can be played within the society, family and other smaller circles. Here are a few of the most popular card game:

-????????? Poker ? is probably the most popular card game in the whole world, statistics showing that around 45 million people have played it at least once in their life. There are many versions of the poker game, among which the most popular being Texas Hold?em and 5 cards Poker (5 Card Draw). Texas Holdem is the most popular online version on the Internet and rules are quite easy: there must be at least 2 players, each of them getting 2 cards. Another 5 cards will be set on the table in a specific order if bets are made on that game. The first 3 cards on the table represent the Flop, the 4^th represents the Turn and the last card is the river. Generally, the Texas Hold?em Poker is played with chips (replacing money) or directly with real money. The 5 card draw is best played in 4, the selected cards usually being from 7-8 and up.

-????????? Another card game usually popular with men is Whist. Depending on the number of players (from 4 up), the cards to be inserted in the game are selected, and usually have to be the players? number multiplied by 8. The game consists in the winning of as many ?hands? as possible; before each round, the players must state exactly how many hands they will win, each extra or minus hand being afterwards deducted from their scores. A regular game of Whist starts with 8 games by using all the 32 available cards, further on each player receiving one card less until only one card remains. Then, players end up being unable to see their own card, only the opponents?; after 8 such games, in each of the following ones one more card is added increasingly until reaching again 8 games of 8 cards. The scoring system is as follows: each player gets 5 points for a winning a round, plus other points representing the equivalent of the hands won. At the end of the game, the player with the most points wins.

-????????? Blackjack is part of a series of card games found in the most famous casinos in the world. Blackjack or ?21? as it is called in certain areas can be played with minimum 2 players. Each of the players gets 2 cards, one face up and the other, face down. The value of the cards from 2 to 10 is normal, while the cards following 10 Cards get 10 points each. The Ace can also be used as 1 point or 11 points depending on the player?s needs. In order to win, players must sum up as many points as possible without exceeding a total of 21.

-????????? War is one of those card games that are specific to younger ages. It is still a fun game and requires at least 2 players. All the cards are equally dealt to all players and with each round, they turn, face up, the first card from their deck. Who has the biggest card wins that group of cards, and if there are two players with the same card, then they call ?War?. The players will choose a number of cards that they will play ?War? with and each puts down the corresponding number from their decks. The last card down will make the difference and decide who will win all the other cards. In the end, the player who gets all the cards also wins the ?War?.

Other more or less famous card games are: Seven, Macaw, Killer surrender, Machu Pichu, The letter etc. At the same time, one of the most famous online card games that can be played by a single player is Solitaire, which can also be found in other versions (Spider Solitaire, Scarab Solitaire). All these games are meant to help people socialize people easier within different groups.

Earlier today there was an edition of the Underground Combat League (UCL), New York City's long-running, unsanctioned MMA promotion.? Unlike most of the other states in the country, New York has deemed professional MMA to be illegal.? But a loophole in the law has allowed amateur events to flourish ? albeit in a quasi-hush-hush world where fighters sometimes use aliases and the locations of shows are kept secret from the athletic commission.?

Please, don't judge them too harshly.? The UCL, for instance, has churned out over forty events since its debut in 2003, and can count among its alumni such fighters as former UFC lightweight champ Frankie Edgar and International Fight League heavyweight Bryan Vetell (as well as a slew of dudes who went on to fight in Strikeforce, the WEC, Bellator and top regional promotions).? And before you accuse anyone of exploitation, remember this: everyone from promoter Peter Storm to the fighters to the fans wants to see New York State sanction the sport; it's only because New York won't that events like this exist.

Main Purpose & Function
Reporting to the Senior Financial Analyst -- Utilities Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) and working with the Manager of Solid Waste Management, the Solid Waste Financial Analyst is responsible for providing financial analysis for the City's Solid Waste Division, coordinating and calculating the Annual Solid Waste Utility fees, overseeing the budgeting for the Solid Waste Division and administering the financial aspects of the Landfill Agreement between the City and the Corporation of Delta, and the Tri-partite (Landfill) Agreement between the City, Metro Vancouver and the Corporation of Delta.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Responsible for providing financial analysis for the City's Solid Waste Division related to the following targets:? Prepares and oversees the budgets submissions from the Branch Managers by assisting and checking for accuracy and completeness and by regularly monitoring the budget expenditures; reporting issues to the Managers and the Director of the Solid Waste Division, as well as the Senior Financial Analyst, Utilities FP&A, and working out possible solutions. Also, use automated and statistical software packages to analyze financial data, present trends, cost estimates and develop forecasts for budget recommendations; Co-ordinates and calculates the Annual Solid Waste Utility fees billed to property owners, ensuring that they are reported and distributed accurately, investigating anomalies and taking corrective actions, and monitors Solid Waste Capital Reserve impacts, evaluating various financial and operational scenarios and alternatives along the way; Conducts research and analysis into cost component structures. This includes reporting on the implementation of all financial aspects of the Solid Waste By-Laws and agreements in which the City of Vancouver is involved and advising the senior management on the financial impacts to the City during the renegotiation of the agreements; Co-ordinates special projects such as cashflow analysis of the Solid Waste Capital Reserve, demand analysis for the Food Scraps program, strategic financial assessments of future Solid Waste Management roles for the City and analyzing other municipalities Solid Waste Operations costs and reviewing, comparing and reconciling them against actual costs of the City of Vancouver; Liaise with other departments and provide co-ordination on issues involving internal audits, risk management and insurance requirements for the Solid Waste Division; Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience
A Bachelor's Degree or equivalent from an accredited university with major course work in commerce, accounting, finance, economics or business administration and designation or eligibility as a Professional Accountant is preferred; minimum of 5 years of increasingly responsible professional experience in accounting, finance, budgeting and making financial analysis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Basic knowledge of the principles, practices and methods of finance, budgeting, budget development, information technology and business concepts. Good knowledge of the municipal financial reporting standards and regulations is preferred. Familiarity with Solid Waste Division programs and services, an understanding of the Tri-partite Agreement and good knowledge of laws and regulations governing the financial operations of the Solid Waste Division would be an asset; Good knowledge of data entry, database access, word processing, spreadsheet development, basic statistics, computerized financial reporting system and other computer applications (MS Word, Excel and SAP) for the purpose of budget preparation, research and forecasting; Strong interpersonal skills, written and oral communication skills, clear and accurate report writing, proven financial analytical abilities to research, compile and summarize varied information, excellent business skills, strong organizational skills in order to prioritize work and meet critical deadlines, demonstrated ability to take initiative, to make sound independent judgments within established policies and regulations and to deal with all stakeholders in a customer focused manner; The position requires good business acumen and the ability to link finance to the business; Also, the person performing this position must maintain open communication with staff from other departments, property owners and other agencies, solving the problems and dealing with issues in a timely manner as they arise.

European regulator: Gene therapy treatment OK

LONDON (AP) ? The European Medicines Agency is recommending the first-ever approval of a gene therapy treatment in the EU, in a significant move for a type of treatment that has so far failed to deliver on its promise to cure diseases.

In a statement on Friday, the EMA said Glybera, made by Dutch company uniQure, should be approved across Europe for the treatment of an extremely rare disorder that leaves people unable to digest fat. The treatment consists of a gene that makes a protein to break down fat.

Gene therapy is an experimental technique that tries to cure diseases by replacing genes that don't work. It has never been approved in the U.S. and most trials over the past two decades have failed. China was the first country to approve a gene therapy treatment in 2003 for cancer.

Scientists have struggled to find ways to deliver the genes safely, often by using a harmless virus. There are also concerns that inserting a gene at the wrong spot could cause cancer or that the body's immune system might attack the new gene and the virus used to deliver it.

The EMA previously rejected Glybera three times but it was reconsidered at the request of the European Commission. The agency recommended approval under tough restrictions and will require the company to set up a registry to closely track patients. Previous trials of the treatment only tested it in 27 patients.

"It is only meant for patients with the greatest need," said Monika Benstetter, an EMA spokeswoman, explaining the gene therapy is intended for people with no other treatment options. She said only a handful of gene therapy treatments had been considered before ? one was recommended for approval but its manufacturer withdrew it before it was finalized.

Recommendations by the EMA are usually given final approval by the European Commission.

Patients with lipoprotein lipase deficiency, the inherited disease Glybera is intended to treat, often cannot eat a normal meal because it can lead to an extremely painful inflammation of the pancreas. Many patients with the disorder have a very restricted diet and only eat a fraction of their daily recommended calories. The condition affects only one to two people per million.

Jorn Aldag, CEO of uniQure, said the company was developing similar treatments for other diseases beyond rare conditions, including Parkinson's. "We believe that just like antibodies, gene therapy will one day be a mainstay in clinical practice," he said in a statement.

Benstetter said there are no other gene therapy treatments currently under consideration by the EMA and was unsure if the agency would get more applications based on Glybera's approval.

"The regulatory pathway is there for gene therapy," she said. "The criteria are the same for gene therapy as for any other medicines. ... Ultimately the companies have to demonstrate the benefits outweigh the risks."

The blowout comes after Derrek ?Nobby? Clark was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, only to have his name withdrawn from the organization?s list of distinguished members. The reason given by the AMA was that there was an error in the balloting process for submitting Clark?s name to the voting ballot, though some outside the AMA say the reason Clark was removed was because of his criminal record, or for other reasons.

Premature Celebration: hands down, there is not a more embarrassing act for a motorcycle racer than finishing too early. Such is the case of Italian CIV 600 Superstock rider Riccardo Russo, who climaxed his race far too early during a recent event at Mugello. Pulling out of the competition with jubilation, it took several pumps of the fist for the Italian to realize that he was not done with the task at hand, as he watched a train of other riders come right by him with still an eager pace. A lesson on holding out until the checkered flag, Russo joins an elite group of riders who have been publicly embarrassed for their problems with premature celebration.

It has been eight months since Husqvarna took the wraps off its second road-going model, but the Husqvarna TR 650 Strada is now officially official ahead of fall?s motorcycle bike shows. A big displacement thumper to compliment the only moderately civil Husqvarna Nuda 900, the Strada is an interesting model to go alongside its parallel-twin street counterpart. Featuring a 652cc water-cooled single-cylinder DOHC motor, the Husqvarna Strada puts out 58hp and 44.25 lbs?ft of torque, the Strada has a strong power-to-weight ratio for its class, and is the on-road variant in Husqvarna?s dual-pronged single-cylinder motorcycle attack plan.

The work of designer Nicolas Petit is one of those gems in motorcycling that really gets our imagination here at A&R working at high-speed. A clean and modern caf? racer design, Nicolas Petit?s BMW R12, which is based off the BMW HP2, is something we?d like to have in our stable for when the journey, not the destination, is the order of the day. Riot forces India's leading carmaker Maruti Suzuki to shut factory, 1 dead, dozens injured

MUMBAI, India - Top Indian carmaker Maruti Suzuki has shut one of its two factories in India after rioting sparked by a labor dispute killed one person and injured dozens of others.

Spokesman Puneep Dhawan said Thursday the plant stopped production Wednesday night because of fire damage caused by rioting workers.

"The plant is burnt in sections. You cannot make any cars," he said.

He said no decision had been taken on whether to reopen the 550,000 vehicle a year plant in Manesar, in the north Indian state of Haryana.

The company is still trying to identify a dead body found charred beyond recognition in a conference room, he said.

The company, which is a subsidiary of Japan's Suzuki Motor Corp., said in a statement that at least 40 managers and executives had been hospitalized with injuries.

The Press Trust of India reported that police were pursuing some 60 workers, including union leaders, on charges including murder and damaging property.

According to Maruti, the unrest was sparked when a worker beat up a supervisor Wednesday morning. The company said the union prevented management from disciplining the worker, blocked exit gates and "held the executives hostage."

After talks broke down, workers "attacked members of the senior management, executives and managers," and ransacked the property, the company said.

The Maruti Suzuki Workers Union, in a statement distributed to Indian media, offered a different version of events, saying that a supervisor had "abused" and made "casteist comments" against a low-caste worker.

Instead of taking action against the supervisor, management suspended the worker, the union said. The union denied responsibility for the violence, saying that management had sent in hundreds of "bouncers" to attack the workers with "sharp weapons and arms" and set fire to part of the factory.

Maruti Suzuki said production at its Gurgaon plant, which can produce 900,000 vehicles a year, was unaffected.

Maruti Suzuki shares plunged over 7 percent in midday trade in Mumbai.

DETROIT (AP) - Doug Fister gave up just two hits over eight innings and Prince Fielder capped a four-run second inning with a two-run single to help the Detroit Tigers beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-2 Wednesday night.

Fister (4-6) allowed one run on Albert Pujols' homer, struck out a season-high 10 and walked two for his third straight win. Joaquin Benoit replaced him in the ninth inning and gave up a one-out triple to hot-hitting rookie Mike Trout, who scored on Torii Hunter's groundout for the Angels' second run.

Angels starter C.J. Wilson (9-6) gave up a season-high seven runs on eight hits and five walks while striking out seven over six innings, extending his winless streak to three starts.

Pujols hit a two-out solo homer, his 17th, in the first inning to give Los Angeles its only lead - which didn't last long. Delmon Young made it 1-all in the home half.

The Tigers provided Fister with more than enough run support in the second inning.

Brennan Boesch led off with a double, Gerald Laird drew a four-pitch walk and Ryan Raburn turned boos into cheers with an RBI single. Miguel Cabrera had with an RBI groundout and Fielder followed with a sharply hit single to left field that made it 5-1.

Boesch hit a two-run double in the fifth.

The rough night might've given Wilson flashbacks. In his last start at Detroit - for the Texas Rangers - he gave up six runs in a 7-5 loss in Game 5 of the AL championship series.

NOTES: The Tigers plan to start Jacob Turner on Sunday against the AL Central-leading Chicago White Sox after he gave up seven runs in just two innings in a 13-0 loss to the Angels on Tuesday night. ... The Angels are hopeful that Vernon Wells and Chris Iannetta can take another step in their comebacks from the disabled list with rehab assignments this weekend.

Art and science have us look at the world in different ways, to see the invisible and imagine the impossible. Yesterday?s NanoLab workshops and lab visits brought us through many orders of magnitude and many scales of construction, from single atoms in a graphene sheet observed by home-made microscopes at the pico characterization lab to the precise etching of silicon wafers in the clean lab to building our own microscopes out of $3 webcams.

When does hacking become precision engineering? When do microscope images become art? We draw a line between science and art (even in the title of the Sci|Art NanoLab), but that line is fuzzy and crossing or ignoring the boundary altogether can be a lot more fun than enforcing the separation. We spent the day making images, learning about optics, building machines, meeting and observing scientists and artists and people in between. Are we doing art or science?

Our students are learning right on top of this fuzzy boundary, and the difference doesn?t seem to be that important to them. I hope that this is a sign of a generational trend, that in the future we won?t feel pigeonholed by a discipline or a university department (a feeling that most of the instructors?just ten years older than the students?describe when talking about their education and their work). I?m not sure how it will all turn out, but perhaps growing up at this boundary, seeing and making in-between, will make the ?two cultures? obsolete.

It is important to remember?that long weekends conincide with double demerit periods. The double demerit scheme is implemented to attempt to ensure drivers take extra care while travelling during the periods.

Demerit Point Scheme

Within a three (3) year period:
Unlicensed drivers cannot accumulate more than 13 demerit points
Professional Drivers cannot accumulate more than 14 demerit points
Provisional 2 drivers cannot accumulate more than 7 demerit points.
Provisional 1 drivers cannot accumulate more than 4 demerit points.
Learner drivers cannot accumulate more than 4 demerit points.
Unrestricted License on Good Behaviour no more than 2 demerit points.

Apart from P2 and P1 license holders, drivers cannot appeal a demerit points suspension. However, what a driver can do is choose not to pay the fine for the offence that would have resulted in the suspension and instead take the matter to Court. If a Magistrate finds the driver not guilty of the offence, or that the driver is guilty of the offence but deals with them under section 10 of the Crimes (Sentencing Procedure) Act 1999, then they will not receive any demerit points ? resulting in no suspension. Obviously there is no guarantee a driver will be found not guilty or be dealt with under Section 10. It is important therefore to seek legal advice and legal representation when your license is at stake.

P2 and P1 drivers who face license suspension through loss of demerits can appeal to the Local Court. A court can take into consideration a range of factors in determining whether the driver is a fit and proper person to hold a license. The court looks at the driver?s driving record, the type of offence/s that led to the loss of license, the circumstances surrounding the loss of the license and the driver?s need for a license be it for work, lack of public transport or other reason.

This camera-phone video of Sidewinder, featuring Tech Sgt. Angie Johnson covering Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" went viral last year. Sidewinder, part of the 571st Air Force Band - a unit that is slated for stand down - has probably played its final songs together.

The little military unit that became an improbable Internet sensation will soon fall silent.?

Sidewinder, a rock band within the Air National Guard, whisked from Afghanistan all the way to Ellen via massive Internet popularity, has likely played its last gig.

?It?s been a wild adventure,? said Sidewinder?s front woman, Tech Sgt. Angie Johnson, a former active-duty Air Force intelligence analyst who also competed on NBC?s ?The Voice? last March. ?Sidewinder had only been home from last summer's deployment (to Afghanistan) for about two months when we learned of the decommissioning of our unit. Needless to say, we were shocked and heartbroken.?

The Air National Guard plans to phase out six of its 11 regional concert bands, converting hundreds of musician slots into other guard specialties, confirmed National Guard spokesman Rick Breintenfeldt.

One of the six posts slated to stand down is the Air National Guard Band of the Central States, a collection of 35 brass, woodwind, and percussion players based in St. Louis, otherwise known as the 571st. Originally formed in 1941, the ensemble was the first National Guard band ever deployed to Afghanistan. They performed classics like ?In the Mood? and patriotic pieces for fellow troops and civilians. Their 35 slots already have been slashed to 19. Some of the remaining musicians, who, like other guard units assemble for two weeks each year and one weekend each month, plan to leave their part-time military jobs. Some will assume new guard duties.

But it was Sidewinder, the 571st?s band-within-a-band, powered by bluesy vocalist Johnson, which truly put combat boots and camo on the American pop music map.

While touring U.S. bases in Southwest Asia last summer, preparing to fly to Afghanistan the next morning, a sweaty Johnson and her fellow musicians cranked out a blazing, acoustic version of Adele's "Rollin' in the Deep.? A soldier in the small audience grabbed his camera phone and captured the ?super rad little impromptu gig,? as Johnson calls it. On Aug. 8, the video was posted on YouTube. After two days, the clip had reached some 130,000 views. By Aug. 19, the video was virall: 1 million views and headed to more than 3 million clicks.

Sidewinder soon was invited to play on ?The Ellen DeGeneres Show?and at the White House.?They slapped groovy beats and racked up good will for the American military ? all of which made the decommissioning news so hard to hear for the musicians in uniform.

?We all shed tears that day,? said Johnson, who plans to continue her fledgling music career?and serve with the 571st?until the unit is formally mothballed in September 2013. ?It didn't make sense to us and still doesn't. But when you're in the military, you learn that people with a lot more stripes on their arms and brass on their shoulders are entrusted with making hard decisions for the betterment of the Armed Forces as a whole. So, we've come to accept the decision ... I will dearly miss my current guard family.?

?It?s a little incongruous to chose our unit to stand down when it has garnered the most attention,? agreed Maj. John Arata, commander of the 571st.

Arata also plays clarinet and piano ? but was best known for his funky, blue fiddle in Sidewinder. Like Johnson, Arata will stay with the downsized concert band until its last day. Until then, the 571st?intends to book occasional gigs when feasible.

?We?ll just need to be more creative with our instrumentation. We?ll have to draw upon our members? flexibilities. There are fewer events that we can accept,? said Arata, a music teacher at Eureka High School, southwest of St. Louis. ?We?ll try and do military-support events where they would only require a small unit, maybe a brass or woodwind quintet.?

The other five Air National Guard bands scheduled to shut their instrument cases for good in 2013 include units based in Georgia, Ohio, Washington, California and Massachusetts.

?Those selected for decommissioning are the bands closest to active-duty regional bands and the bands with the most sparsely populated (areas of responsibility),? Breintenfeldt said.

The 571st?has long been tasked with playing events in Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas and South Dakota.
