Kinect for Xbox 360 price drops by $40 today

Microsoft's motion gaming peripheral still includes a free game

If you've been holding off on buying a Kinect sensor until Microsoft dropped its price, that time has come. Originally introduced at $149.99 on November 4, 2010, the motion-sensing peripheral has officially dropped in price to $109.99 effective immediately. Retailers such as Amazon are already honoring the new asking price.

The cost of entry will get you the sophisticated add-on along with a copy of Kinect Adventures, a collection of minigames meant to show off the Kinect's capabilities. Most brand-new Kinect games run $49.99, but you can get a number of great Kinect titles ? including Child of Eden and Dance Central ? for less than $20. There are currently 12 Kinect-compatible games available on Xbox Live Arcade.

If you're looking for something else to do with your Kinect than play games ? and you're of a technical mind ? why not see if you can add to the impressive work done by these hardware hackers to transform Microsoft's peripheral into a remote cat-petting robot and more? Of course, Kinect is being used for some serious applications, too, like helping kids with autism.

Should kids learn programming as a language? - TechsTalk ...

?

When I was a kid I read some science fiction about computer as a machine that produces copies of anything you can imagine. Super machine could make an ice cream cone or beautiful sail boat? Nice, isn?t it? The reality came way later, when I saw first device called computer. I wasn?t disappointed that this computer cannot produce any ice cream but I saw a long walk to freedom of conversation with computer. As computer is very obedient to you commands, the commands need to be very precise.

Modern kids are more and more involved in accomplishing various computer related tasks and simple knowledge of keyboard is definitely not enough. Even though programming languages are getting more and more simple, you still need to commit your time to learn basic rules of programming. You cannot speak the language of computer the same way as you speak human languages. The computer language doesn?t allow approximation and missing some precision in giving initial information may cause fatal error. Learning computer programming language is mostly learning keyword and structures. Structures of programming languages is the bunch of libraries that are pre-installed in certain language to accomplishing various, often used, tasks. So, as in English you can say to other human being that you want to eat, and your correspondent will reply with the dish he thinks you want to eat or suggest a few options from those available in his refrigerator. Computer will not understand this command at all, because you need to be more precise and call certain structures before you even make a general order of food. Other word you need to firstly create menu and then order from it.

So, the learning of programming language can be compared to learning physics or math but not language.

Future development of computer programming languages and computer hardware may allow some form of? pseudo intellect of machine and then machine can learn to accept approximate commands. But if and when this time comes surely programming will be not really something that only programmer can do, but normal user with basic knowledge of computer may create necessary program for current needs. However, there will still be professional engineers who will continue development of programming languages itself.

So, back to the question ? should our kids learn programming as a language in schools. The answer is definitely YES, however,? programming language should not be learned the same way as human language but rather as math. ALSO, there can be computer literacy discipline that could be studied the same way as human language and this way new generation of people on our planet will have both: geek engineers who will be able to develop programming languages, and regular computer users who will be able to use all computer power.

Lets try to imagine future generation of computer ?

  1. it will be powerful machine that will not have processor clock measured by Hertz and will not have number of cores. Most likely processor speed will not be limited, the same way as human brain.

The size of memory will not be limited either. Most likely both of the above parameters, technologically will be relative to those biological analogues of human resources.

Most likely all computers will loose their individuality and information data will not be located on one machine but all machines will be connected together

there will be no applications or just one application ? programming interface. User of computer will just describe to intellectual machine? their tasks and machine itself will make temporary application to accomplish the task.

Machine will use data available for all machines in the world and this data will be updated during work of other users, other words ? machine will learn all the time, and will be smarter every second.

Well, those are? still in science fiction stage, but remember I mentioned what was science fiction for me in 70-80th? Yes, computer itself was science fiction.

Asbestos and the Military: Mesothelioma and Vets ? MOGC

Today?s post is actually brought to you by Navy veteran, Doug Karr who writes about veteran health for the Mesothelioma Alliance Center.? Doug is passionate about letting veterans know about some of the things they may have been exposed to during their service with the Armed Forces.? Please take the time to read this informational article and check to see if you or someone you might know may have been exposed to asbestos during their time in the service.? As with all types of cancer, early detection is key and knowledge makes early detection possible.

We thank Doug for bringing this to our attention and for his passion for helping veterans.

Asbestos: Mesothelioma and Veterans

For decades, men and women in the Armed Forces have been exposed to the serious health risks of asbestos-containing material. First mined by the US in the 1800?s, asbestos was comprised of silicon fibers that were converted into strong individual threads that were heat resistant, durable and fireproof. Used extensively on military bases up until the 1970?s, it is estimated by the US Department of Veterans Affairs that millions of military personnel have been exposed to asbestos; the only known cause of a rare lung cancer?mesothelioma.

High Risk of Asbestos Exposure

Mesothelioma is a cancer that results from inhaled or swallowed asbestos fibers that become trapped in the protective lining of the lungs. Once a veteran is exposed, signs and symptoms may not develop for over 20 years, and thousands of veterans have since been diagnosed with mesothelioma.

Asbestos was used in every branch of the US Armed Forces to construct military bases, vehicles, aircraft and ships. Every branch of military service exposed veterans to the deadly dangers of asbestos through hundreds of applications. As a result, veterans make up about 30 percent of all diagnosed cases of mesothelioma.

Navy veterans where exposed to asbestos on poorly ventilated ships and those who worked in the shipyards. Close living quarters in submarines shared the air with asbestos particles in navigation rooms, mess halls, and sleeping quarters. Often, the Navy veterans in construction would bring home dust particles from asbestos on their clothing. Therefore, is not uncommon for their families to develop mesothelioma as well.

The sleeping quarters and training facilities of the Air Force bases were built with asbestos containing materials. Flooring, ceiling tiles, wall insulation and the external parts of buildings also were constructed from asbestos fibers. Aircraft used the fibers on brake insulation and other components that came into contact with Airmen on a frequent basis.

Marines and sailors lived and served on naval ships that exposed them to asbestos as well. Navy warships and vessels were constructed with many asbestos products that lined the living quarters, fire walls, boiler rooms and mess halls. Due to long periods of time spent on ships, Marines are a high risk for exposure.

Army bases used asbestos extensively to construct buildings and fireproof certain installations. Besides living quarters, asbestos was used to provide flooring and ceiling tiles, contained it in cements and sidings, and was used extensively in manufacturing vehicles. Army housing was built with asbestos and exposed Army veterans and their families to asbestos related disease.

Asbestos Risks
All those who served their country in the US Military have a high risk of asbestos exposure.? Mesothelioma and other asbestos-related disease may not appear for a few decades after exposure. Family members can be affected as well.? Please take the time to consider whether you or someone you know may have been exposed to asbestos.? If so, please seek medical attention and help.? Heart for God: You Are What You Eat

Sunday: 19 August, 2012 ?? Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Proverbs 9:1?6 / Ephesians 5:15?20 / John 6:51?58

You Are What You Eat

We?ve all heard the old adage ?you are what you eat?, but have you ever stopped to think exactly how true that is?? Super Size Me is a 2004 American documentary film that follows a 30-day period during which Morgan Spurlock ate only McDonalds?s food three times per day, and eating every item on the chain's menu at least once. The film documents this lifestyle's drastic effect on Spurlock's physical and psychological well-being. As a result, the then-32-year-old Spurlock gained 24? lbs., his cholesterol level rose from a healthy level to 230, and he experienced mood swings, sexual dysfunction, and fat accumulation in his liver.? It took Spurlock fourteen months to lose the weight gained from his experiment. You are what you eat!

The Wisdom writer gives an invitation from the Lord: Come, eat of my food, and drink of the wine I have mixed. The Psalmist sings: Taste and see the goodness of the Lord. It is true spiritually: You are what you eat!? The effect may not be as evident to those who have not been taught to discern spiritual cause and effect, but it is no less true. This is one way to understand Paul?s admonition to the Ephesians: do not get drunk on wine.... but be filled with the Spirit....

We live in a spiritually rebellious world that seeks to blind us so that we do not recognize who God really is.? We live in a spiritually rebellious world that seeks to seduce us so that we do not perceive the connections between belief and behavior.? We live in a spiritually rebellious world that seeks to deceive us so that we deny the connection between breaking God?s Commandments and experiencing both personal and societal dysfunction and pain.

How can we keep our bearings in this world that so discourages faithfulness?? One way is to stay in touch with reality, and that happens when we faithfully receive Jesus in the Eucharist (and I mean faithfully).? This is the most important practice Jesus left his followers as an outward expression of our union with him and our unity with one another.

Most of you know I am a relatively ?new? Catholic.? My wife and I came into the Church after more than 30 years of pastoral ministry in Evangelical churches. Although I had no idea at the time, my journey into the Church started in 1999 when I began to use The Liturgy of the Hours for my daily prayers. Here I read things from the Church Fathers I had never heard before (after two Masters degrees and a Doctorate); I remember thinking ?these guys sound so Catholic!? One theme was the centrality of the Eucharist in Christian worship, with evidence that the Real Presence of Jesus had been the understanding of the Bread and Cup from the beginning.

I am among you this way today because I came to see Jesus in the Eucharist, and I want to follow Jesus Christ above all other things in this world.? How can we keep our bearings in this world that so discourages faithfulness?? One way is to stay in touch with reality, and that happens when we faithfully receive Jesus in the Eucharist and remember that he said, in this most explicit and literal section of what is called ?The Bread of Life Discourse? ?? For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me.

I know that a fifteen-minute homily is not the place to try to develop all that is here. This passage calls for careful interpretation, looking at Old Testament covenant background and the earliest writings in the Church. The Didache (or, ?The Teachings of the Twelve Apostles?) is one of the earliest Christian documents following the New Testament, and it gives this explicit witness: ?On the Lord?s Day, when you have been gathered together, break bread and celebrate the Eucharist....?? Ignatius of Antioch, who died in A.D. 107 is a very early post-New Testament witness to the meaning of Christian Communion:

But consider those who are of a different opinion with respect to the grace of Christ which has come unto us, how opposed they are to the will of God.? They abstain from the Eucharist and from prayer, because they confess not the Eucharist to be the flesh of our Saviour Jesus Christ, which suffered for our sins. . .? (Epistle to the Smyraens, VI, VII; in The Ante-Nicene Fathers, vol. 1 [Grand Rapids: William D. Eerdmans Publishing, 1979], p89 ? underlined emphasis added).

When Jesus died on the cross it was the ultimate sacrifice for sin. We enter into that sacrifice when we come together to the Lord's Table. We are proclaiming that the Son of God gave his life?s blood for us and there is no condemnation! Jesus Christ has done a perfect work that goes beyond time, and yet Jesus has given us a tangible and ongoing way to bring the temporal and the eternal together.

In the next section John tells us that when Jesus said Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood... the people took offense. Some who had followed him to that point turned away. The same rejection and offense happens today. Even among Christians who are passionate in their commitment to Jesus there is objection and sometimes hostility. The usual ?explanation? is that Jesus is speaking figuratively.? It is said that just as he is not a literal ?gate? or ?vine,? neither does he mean this literally.? But.... first, the idioms are very different, and second, Jesus offers no correction to the crowd?s response, but rather he intensifies it as the dialogue progresses.? I considered these things in my own journey.... and then I had this epiphany: Christian Faith is based on the belief that Almighty God, the One who is both Creator of the universe and yet greater than the universe, was able to come into our world in a human body and still be fully God. Yet, people saw Jesus and did not recognize God. If that is true, then it is not such a different miracle and mystery that the Incarnate Son of God can be physically present in what appears to be bread and wine. Neither is it surprising that unbelief cannot ?see? it.? But for those who believe, the Eucharist draws us into Jesus? death for us and gives us his life. God wants us to become what we eat!

That itself is sometimes the basis for skepticism and unbelief.? If the Lord Jesus Christ is truly present in the Eucharist and physically enters us when we eat, then why isn?t there more spiritual power and glory in our lives? The answer is, You are what you eat!? How many of us feed on Jesus once a week, in a hurry and possibly rather absent-mindedly?? How many of us ?feed? on other things through the week?? things which hinder and even kill the life of God in us? What does it do to us to take into ourselves the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Lord and then try to mix in the list from last Sunday?s epistle reading: bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, reviling and malice (Eph 4:31)? What about the immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire and greed that Paul adds to the list in his letter to the Colossians (see 3:5?9)?! We do not receive the intended benefit from the Eucharist if we are casually embracing sins that choke the life of our Lord in us. Disobedience can cause what God gives for blessing to turn into impediment. Paul even warns the Corinthians that anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body, eats and drinks judgment on himself (1Cor 11:29).? This does not sound like carelessness with a mere ?symbol.? Jesus says here: unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you (6:53).

We need to take care and pay attention. People brought up in the Church can develop an immunity to worship. It?s as if we get inoculated so that we?re dulled to the reality of God.? Jesus can become a mere mental association, some historical figure we know about, but not a living person close to us so that our day to day lives are truly changed.? ?Church? gets reduced to something we ?do? ? something to scratch off our to-do list so we can get on with the things we really want to do (get to the restaurant or watch the ballgame ?? which has something to say about the things we think are most important).

When we come to Mass we are treading on holy ground.? "But it's so repetitive," critics say. "It is so mechanical. It gets so boring just doing the same thing..." Love is what keeps beauty and wonder from becoming "repetitive" and "mechanical." Like little children who cannot get enough of a father's playful attention, we come into the mystery of the Eucharist with the need to say to our heavenly Father, "Do it again, Daddy, do it again." This is not boredom with the "same old thing."

What I wish for you for the rest of your lives ??and what I hold before myself ?? is that when doubts come or when the world offers us its meager fare of spiritual junk food, we'll find a time and place to pray: ? Lord....? I?ve been going too often to the wrong table and not coming to your Table with clean hands and pure heart.... Feed me, Lord, with your Body and Blood and let it fill my soul.... ?

Remember: You are what you eat!

Hey Sex Kitten! Turn Your Meow Into a Roar | Kisses & Chaos

by guest blogger Debra Smouse

I was having coffee with a dear friend.? We were talking about the relationships with our significant other and that topic came up.? You know the one.? The S-E-X discussion.? And the lack of that in her life.

?You always seem to mention how HOT sex is at your house.?

And then I let her in on a secret:

it all had begun with changing my relationship with ME.?

And when I began to see myself as desirable, loveable, and sexy?then my sex life followed suit.

Then she told me I should teach a course in re-discovering your sexy.

That day, I went home and purchased the domain ?Inner Sex Kitten?.?? And I began creating the material for the program based on my transformation from unhappy wife to divorcee to rediscovering my sexuality and happiness.? I wanted to harvest every single nuance and gem of what made me love my life and glow with an inner joy.? I wanted to capture those adjustments I had made to lean into my desires and transform my life.

I can honestly tell you that today, I am in love with my daily life.? Is it perfect? Of course not.? Yet, I?m happy, do work that fulfills me, and am in love with a wonderful partner who loves me for exactly who I am.

And yes, I feel confident in who I am and comfortable rocking my sexiness.

I believe that within every woman is a vibrant, passionate, and sexy being.? Sometimes, she is lost to all the ?should be?s? and ?must do?s?, and just needs a little help to break out of the shell.? I?ve been there.? I?ve been that.? And I learned that in order to be truly my best, I needed to allow all the passions, love, and sexiness out.

Make Your Inner Sex Kitten Roar.?? It?s going to be a 12-month intimate circle coaching program beginning on September 2nd.

The material is divided into four modules:

Rebuilding Your Foundation,

Falling in Love with You,

Let?s Talk about Sex & Relationships, and

Defining YOU and Your Life.?

?
The lessons will be delivered weekly, so that you have fresh material each week, but won?t be overwhelmed.

Each month, there will be a group coaching call.? I purposely have kept the size of the group small (4 to 6 women) so that everyone gets individual attention during the group calls.? Each month, each person gets a 1 hour one-on-one coaching call as well. ?

Above all, I?ve made the program affordable.

The investment for Make Your Inner Sex Kitten Roar will be $147 a month. But if you sign up for the program before August 24th, I?ll lower the monthly fee to $129 a month.

And because I love Kisses & Chaos so very much, I?m offering to forget about the last two payments for anyone who mentions the lovely Alli.? So, instead of 12 payments, you?ll receive a year of transformation with a financial investment of 10 months.

Make Your Inner Sex Kitten Roar is designed to help you fall in love with yourself. To fall in love with your daily life. To rediscover your power and your sexuality.? To cast aside the labels and roles you?ve assigned yourself and live in pure joy as YOU.? To re-ignite your sexual desire.? To make your relationships better. To unleash the Sex Kitten inside of every woman.

I know that YOU have a sexy beast inside of you.? And It?s time for us to make her ROAR with Joy and Pride.

Saving a penny: Stem cell therapy shows promise in repairing stress urinary incontinence

ScienceDaily (Aug. 17, 2012) ? Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) can occur due to sneezing, coughing, exercising or even laughing and happens because the pelvic floor muscles are too weak causing leakage when the bladder is put under pressure. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Medicine shows that a new technique, using stem cells isolated from amniotic fluid, can regenerate damaged urethral sphincter muscles and prevent pressure incontinence in mice.

Although SUI is more common during and after pregnancy, and after the age of 40, one in three women will experience it at some point in their lives. Men can also be affected, especially after prostate surgery. SUI is treatable and in many cases losing weight, reducing caffeine intake, pelvic floor exercises, and bladder training can have very beneficial effects. If this does not work more invasive treatments are necessary, however there can be serious side effects associated with surgery.

Using stem cells to regenerate the damaged or weak muscles has been proposed as an alternative to surgery. But most protocols for harvesting stem cells also require invasive procedures, and often produce very low numbers of viable cells. In contrast amniotic stem cells can be collected easily, and have very low immunogenicity, reducing chances of rejection. Researchers from Kyungpook National University, Korea, investigated the ability of stem cells isolated from human amniotic fluid obtained during routine amniocentesis to regenerate damaged urethral sphincter muscles in mice.

James Yoo and Tae Gyun Kwon, who led this research, explained, "These stem cells are mesenchymal and consequently have the ability to become muscle cells when grown under the right conditions. We found that the stem cells were able to survive for seven days inside the mice but by 14 days they had all disappeared. Nevertheless they were able to induce regeneration of the mouse's own urethral sphincter muscle."

Quite how stem cells are able to retrain the body's own cells is still not fully understood. Not only was muscle regenerated, but this muscle had proper connections to nerves, and was able to improve the pressure required in the bladder before incontinence begins and stops. BABY SHOWER/GIVEAWAY (New and Improved and with PERKS!)

Note: Before you read any further....please not that all of my daily blog posts will be posted in the tab at the top of my blog title "Daily Posts". ?I'm leaving the giveaway/baby shower as the main page from now until we are fully funded for our adoption. Thanks!

BACK TO THE BABY SHOWER/GIVEAWAY!!!!

We took a one week break from the baby/shower giveaway to do an online auction which was a total success! However, I have some very big news!!!! WE ARE EXPECTING TO TRAVEL SOON (for details you can email or facebook me)! Thanks to the auction, we brought in right at $2,000 so if my best guess and estimations are right that leaves us needing $6,000 to be fully funded.? I say "best guess and estimations" because there is no way for me to be able to know what flights will cost until they are booked.

$6,000!!!!! In a way I think....wow that is sooooo much money and it seems impossible that we could raise that in such little time! In another way I think...$6,000?...we can do that...I've seen families be fully funded in just hours of fundraising during emergencies!

We REALLY NEED your help folks! We are so so so close to saving these girls and will not be able to do it...no matter how far we have came, without your help!

If you haven't seen our baby shower/giveaway before now, please take a look! It is incredible! With Christmas coming up, why wouldn't you want to enter in this and possibly get something in return! Right now, your chances are really GREAT!

Don't leave us now....not after coming this far.

TAKE A LOOK!
________________________________________________________________________________

You're are being invited to a baby shower they may be a one of a kind for you! These "babies" are not actually "babies"! They have been waiting for many years to be brought into a world where they can be cared for and loved as every child has the right to be! You will find that on our registry, there will be no gifts of clothing, toys, supplies, cute little gadgets, or any other thing you would typically see on a baby shower registry. Instead you will see things like, donations for flights, meals, medical visits, apartment stays, etc. These are the things that are necessary for us to bring them home. Once they are home we can shower them with love, attention, and goodies. However, for now....our focus has to be on getting them here and without you all....this can't happen!

We are asking that you treat this invitation a little more serious than you might a random invitation from an acquaintance or friend because truly....two lives are depending on this!!!!! Please help us bring them home and save them from what is inevitable if we don't get funded!

Groupon shares 26 percent off on 2Q slowdown

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Groupon's stock is about 26 percent cheaper, but that doesn't make it a bargain.

Its stock fell Tuesday as analysts slashed targets and ratings on the online deals company after it reported its first-ever quarter-to-quarter decline in gross billings, a measure of how much money Groupon Inc. collects from customers.

Groupon blamed the weak economy in Europe and unfavorable currency-exchange rates.

But analysts pointed to a more troubling possibility: online deals fatigue.

Clayton Moran, an analyst with Benchmark Capital, slashed his price target on the shares from $20 to $7 and downgraded his rating to "Hold" from "Buy."

The stock fell $1.98, or 26 percent, at $5.57 in midday trading Tuesday. That's 72 percent below its initial public offering price of $20 in November.

Police: MMA fighter found naked in Calif. church

(AP) ? Mixed martial arts fighter and reality show host Jason "Mayhem" Miller was in jail on suspicion of burglary Monday night after deputies responding to reports of a break-in said they found him naked inside a Southern California church.

Miller was being held on $20,000 bail and was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday, Orange County jail records showed.

The pastor at Mission Hills Church in Mission Viejo called authorities when he found evidence of a break-in Monday morning, including books and CDs that were strewn about, white powder on the floors and missing boards from a previously broken window, sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino said.

Deputies arrived and said they found Miller naked on a couch.

"When they asked him his name he responded, 'Mayhem,' " Amormino told the Orange County Register.

They also found evidence that Miller had set off fire extinguishers inside the church, Amormino said. Miller was coherent and cooperated with authorities as he was arrested.

Miller, a popular professional middleweight in the mixed martial arts world, has fought for several organizations including UFC, but has lost three of eight fights.

He also hosted the MTV show "Bully Beatdown," a reality show where bullies are challenged to take on professional MMA fighters for a chance to win money.

Before his last fight on May 27, Miller said he would retire if he was defeated, and went on to lose a lackluster decision to C.B. Dollaway

James Naughton Dead: Former Philadelphia Inquirer Editor Dies At 73

PHILADELPHIA -- James M. Naughton, a former reporter for The New York Times and executive editor at The Philadelphia Inquirer, has died after a battle with cancer, his wife said. He was 73.

Diana Naughton said from St. Petersburg, Fla., on Sunday that her husband died peacefully surrounded by family members Saturday.

James Naughton began working for a local newspaper while in high school in Ohio. From 1962 to 1969, he worked for The Plain Dealer in Cleveland and was a police reporter for WGAR radio during a four-month newspaper strike, according to a biography from The Poynter Institute for Media Studies, where Naughton was president until he retired in 2003.

From 1969 to 1977, Naughton was a Washington correspondent for The New York Times, covering the Nixon administration and the Watergate hearings.

Naughton then worked almost two decades at The Philadelphia Inquirer, stepping down as executive editor in 1996. He spent seven years as president of The Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The Philadelphia Inquirer on Sunday called him "irrepressibly mischievous," recounting such pranks as donning a chicken costume for a presidential news conference and "springing all manner of livestock on unsuspecting colleagues."

"I love being in the company of people who care about the written word, the oral word," Naughton said upon his retirement from Poynter, according to the Tampa Bay Times. "I love the dark humor and a mix of skepticism and a self-effacing understanding of the role."

Naughton is survived by his wife, four children and five grandchildren. Diana Naughton said a small family ceremony is planned for Wednesday in Painesville, Ohio.

Cameron Diaz to pen a book on nutrition and health for teens

Cameron Diaz is taking a page from her good friend Gwyneth Paltrow and writing a book on nutrition and health for teen girls.

According to a flurry of media reports in the past few days, the What to Expect When You're Expecting star is dipping her toes in the publishing pool for the first time.

"She wants to stop their fixation on being thin, and for teenage girls to understand that being healthy is more important," a publishing source reportedly told E! News. "She wants to use her celebrity to make a difference. She knows she is a role model to girls and she really wants to use that position to do good."

The actress, who will turn 40 this month, secured a deal with Harper Collins, according to The Daily Mail, with the book expected to be released next year.

"Cameron is going to be visiting high schools around the country to talk to teenagers about their food choices and what is important to them," according to the source at E! News. "She wants them to know that being thin should not be their priority, it's about getting the right vitamins and knowing what foods will give them energy and keep them strong. She wants to get their feedback, learn about how they decide what to eat now, and teach them to make more informed choices."

The Olympics as a Story of Risk Management - Will Jennings - Blogs

A lot of things didn't happen at the Olympics this year, all of which were extensively prepared for. A terrorist incident, a breakdown of the London rail system, power blackouts, volcanic ash clouds, flooding, an outbreak of infectious disease?the London organizing committee (LOCOG) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) spent years thinking about every scenario they could imagine. Simulations of security incidents were rehearsed, and contingency plans for mass evacuations or emergency situations were put in place.

Risk management is now at the heart of the governance model for the Olympic Games and the Olympic movement, and not only because of their growing scale and complexity. There is also the time horizon involved, which can be up to twenty years from the genesis of a host city's bid to the conclusion of the actual event. Long timelines mean greater vulnerability to emerging risks?that is, dangers with a large potential impact that are not well understood or easily quantified, or which emerge as the unanticipated result of disparate causal processes interacting. These risks can emanate from the realm of security, public health, natural ecology, technology, or economics. In the run-up to the London 2012 Olympics, for example, the global financial crisis caused private developers for the Olympic Village project to withdraw, requiring a refinancing package backed by government.

Consider, too, that when threats materialize at large-scale events, the damage often spills over to other parties. Even before the official opening of London 2012, a mix-up with the flag for the North Korean women's football team had organizers scrambling to resolve a diplomatic spat. Other mega-events have sometimes taken their toll in business disruption, by interrupting supply chains, altering consumption, or giving rise to workforce absenteeism. The Olympics can bring a halt to "business as usual" for the host government as well, as it diverts resources to support and police the event. Higher than normal volumes of population movements can create hazards for public health and cause traffic congestion. The influx of spectators offers a target for petty crime, and the symbolism of the Olympics presents a temptation for terrorists.

One key to effective risk management is the ability to distinguish between phenomena that cannot reasonably be foreseen and dangers that are "self-inflicted" because they could be avoided by thorough planning and careful execution. At the start of the Atlanta 1996 Olympics, it was a catalog of minor operational and logistical problems that led journalists to start reporting on "the glitch Games." The truth is that risk is often organizational in its origins, created through poor decision-making, misjudgements in planning assumptions, or human error in operations (such as in monitoring or enforcement activities). Many threats are not unforeseeable, but lie just beyond the edge of current knowledge. In planning for the Olympics, warning signals can be imperceptible amidst the noise, due to the relative scarcity of local experience, as organizers tread an unknown path (although there is a growing Olympic professional services complex made up of firms and consultants contracted to advise on bid teams and organising committees).

Managing risk involves a judicious mix of preventing the risks that can reasonably be controlled, learning to recognize the ones that can't be prevented, being prepared to react to limit damage, and having the resources to recover from the problems that do occur. Olympics organizers traditionally focused on reaction and recovery, using tools such as insurance (taken out for personal injury and property coverage), safety plans, and command and control structures. Since the 1980s, however, Games organizing committees have increasingly invested in teams and systems dedicated to the management of risk through internal controls. Risk mitigation is now integrated into decision-making and operations, and no longer treated as just an input into the calculation of insurance premiums.

Ensuring readiness for Games-time (in Olympic-speak) now involves strategic pre-emption through stress-testing and scenario planning. Table-top 'gaming' exercises at the top of the chain of command and practical training of personnel through rehearsals are routine across many of the diverse functions of Olympic operations. In the months leading up to London 2012, for example, visible military rehearsals were staged on the River Thames in addition to many test events performed on the main site. Ahead of Vancouver 2010, IT planning identified around six hundred scenarios for rehearsals in a formal playbook which also documented procedures to follow in the event of an incident.

The rise of Olympic risk management is certainly evident at the level of the IOC, the guardian of the Games. It is understandably preoccupied with financial risk, since the event is effectively its only commercial asset, and with reputational risk, given that the Olympic "halo" that derives from this is what makes that asset so valuable. Since the events of 9/11, the IOC has taken out insurance cover against event cancellation due to either terrorism or natural disaster (something which organizing committees had done for many years before). More significantly, though, since the 1990s it has increasingly formalized its process of evaluation of bids and its monitoring of the readiness of preparations of host cities.

Bids of applicant cities must now be presented according to a standardised template, with covenants of support from the relevant public authorities and political actors. The IOC's Evaluation Commission then reports on the technical quality of the bid, prior to the vote of its membership to award the Games. After this, the monitoring of readiness is transferred to the Coordination Commission, with its inspection visits providing opportunities to identify risks in project management and operations.

The other crucial aspect in which the IOC has reshaped the way in which risk is understood by Olympic organizers is through its attempts to formalize learning between events under its Olympic Games Knowledge Management program. This integrated framework of services and documentation (made available to cities after a candidature fee has been paid) consists of an observer and secondment program for officials from future host cities, workshops, technical manuals, a Games evaluation process, and debriefing.

Olympics organizers and the IOC have wisely leveraged the business world's growing understanding of risk management. "Risk-based" approaches to planning for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and the London 2012 Summer Olympics (confirmed through research interviews with senior officials) reveal the strong influence of the ideas and practice of risk management, for example in the creation of risk registers (i.e. databases) and monitoring systems put in place to spot issues that pose potential dangers further down the line. The rise of Olympic risk management has touched not only on the most visible fields of finance and security, but a wide range of activities, such as in procurement and contract management, health and safety, the assessment of environmental impacts, and public health planning.

In turn, as organizers of Olympic games have become more sophisticated in risk management over the past thirty years, the broader discipline and profession of risk management has benefited from its example. As the concept of risk itself has taken hold in modern societies and organizations, the Olympics provide a compelling case study in the evolution and promise of risk management.

Rectal Cancer Treatment in India at Mumbai and Delhi at Low Cost ...

Article by Pankaj Nagpal

Rectal CancerOverview

Rectal Cancer The rectum is the lower part of the colon that connects the large bowel to the anus. The rectum?s primary function is to store formed stool in preparation for evacuation. Like the colon, The 3 layers of the rectal wall are as follows: ?

* Mucosa: ? This layer of the rectal wall lines the inner surface. The mucosa is composed of glands that secrete mucus to help the passage of stool.

* Muscularis propria: ? This middle layer of the rectal wall is composed of muscles that help the rectum keep its shape and contract in a coordinated fashion to expel stool.

* Mesorectum: ? This fatty tissue surrounds the rectum. In addition to these 3 layers, another important component of the rectum is the surrounding lymph nodes (also called regional lymph nodes). Lymph nodes are part of the immune system and assist in conducting surveillance for harmful materials (including viruses and bacteria) that may be threatening the body. Lymph nodes surround every organ in the body, including the rectum Rectal Cancer Causes The actual cause of rectal cancer is unclear. However, the following are risk factors for developing rectal cancer: ? * Increasing age * Smoking * Family history of colon or rectal cancer * High-fat diet and/or a diet mostly from animal sources * Personal or family history of polyps or colorectal cancer Rectal Cancer Symptoms Rectal cancer can cause many symptoms that require a person to seek medical care. However, rectal cancer may also be present without any symptoms, underscoring the importance of routine health screening.

Symptoms to be aware of include the following: ?

* Bleeding o Seeing blood mixed with stool is a sign to seek immediate medical care. Although many people bleed due to hemorrhoids, a doctor should still be notified in the event of rectal bleeding.

o Prolonged rectal bleeding (perhaps in small quantities that is not seen in the stool) may lead to anemia, causing fatigue, shortness of breath, light-headedness, or a fast heartbeat.

* Obstruction o A rectal mass may grow so large that it prevents the normal passage of stool. This blockage may lead to the feeling of severe constipation or pain when having a bowel movement. In addition, abdominal pain or cramping may occur due to the blockage. o The stool size may appear narrow so that it can be passed around the rectal mass. Therefore, pencil-thin stool may be another sign of an obstruction from rectal cancer. o A person with rectal cancer may have a sensation that the stool cannot be completely evacuated after a bowel movement.

* weight loss: Cancer may cause weight loss. Unexplained weight loss (in the absence of dieting or a new exercise program) requires a medical evaluation.

Diagnosis In making a diagnosis of rectal cancer, your doctor will first start by recording your medical history, asking about any symptoms you may be experiencing and conducting a thorough physical examination. He/she also may recommend one or more of the following diagnostic tests:

* Digital rectal exam involves the doctor or nurse inserting a gloved, lubricated finger into the rectum to feel for an abnormalities * Barium enema also known as a lower gastrointestinal series, takes X-rays of the large intestines. * Fecal occult blood test is a noninvasive test that detects the presence of hidden, or occult blood in the stool. Such blood may arise from anywhere along the digestive tract. Hidden blood in the stool is often the first, and in many cases the only, warning sign that a person has colorectal cancer. * Sigmoidoscopy is performed to see inside the rectum and the lower colon and remove polyps or other abnormal tissue for examination under a microscope. * Colonoscopy is performed to see inside the rectum and the entire colon and remove polyps or other abnormal tissue for examination under a microscope.* Polypectomy is performed during a sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy to remove polyps. * Biopsy is a test in which a small amount of tissue from the suspected area is removed for examination by a pathologist to make a diagnosis.

Rectal Cancer Treatment Medical Treatment The treatment and prognosis of rectal cancer depend on the stage of the cancer, which is determined by the following 3 considerations: ? * How deeply the tumor has invaded the wall of the rectum * Whether the lymph nodes appear to have cancer in them * Whether the cancer has spread to any other locations in the body (Organs that rectal cancer commonly spreads to include the liver and the lungs.)

The stages of rectal cancer are as follows: ? * Stage I: ? The tumor involves only the first or second layer of the rectal wall and no lymph nodes are involved. * Stage II: ? The tumor penetrates into the mesorectum, but no lymph nodes are involved. * Stage III: ? Regardless of how deeply the tumor penetrates, the lymph nodes are involved with the cancer. * Stage IV: ? Convincing evidence of the cancer exists in other parts of the body, outside of the rectal area.

HSBC wins court bid to evict Occupy Hong Kong protesters

HONG KONG (Reuters) - HSBC won a legal bid on Monday to have members of the Occupy Hong Kong movement evicted from the open-air plaza beneath the bank's Asian headquarters, bringing an end to one of the longest-running Occupy demonstrations.

The Hong Kong protests, sparked by the Occupy Wall Street movement that targeted U.S. financial policies blamed for the income gap between rich and poor, spanned a period of growing resentment in this city of 7 million people against perceived cozy ties between the government and big business.

The movement's aim to draw worldwide attention to income inequality also touched a nerve in this former British colony, which has one of the biggest income gaps in Asia and property prices among the highest in the world.

Monday's order came more than nine months after protesters pitched tents in the heart of Hong Kong's financial district, home to global banks such as Standard Chartered , Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan .

The protesters, who have been given until August 27 to vacate the site, remained defiant.

"We won't leave even if they (come) here to remove us and we'll hold a meeting tomorrow night to discuss how we'll deal with the eviction," said Leung Wing Lai, one of the core members of the Occupy Hong Kong movement.

HSBC said it sought legal action after attempts to get the protesters to leave voluntarily failed.

The Hong Kong movement attracted students, young professionals, activists, the unemployed and the homeless, as well as victims of the Lehman mini-bond scandal who faced massive losses when the New York-based investment bank filed for bankruptcy in 2008.

The plaza was home to around 100 protesters at the peak of the movement, said spokesperson Tiv Wong, although only around 10 activists remained now.

The Battle To Define Paul Ryan: 'Bold' vs. 'Radical' (The Note)

By MICHAEL FALCONE ( @michaelpfalcone ) and AMY WALTER ( @amyewalter )

NOTABLES:

YOUR SECRET IS SAFE WITH BETH. Clandestine flights. A slight disguise. Long drives to out-of-the-way airports by an aide's 19-year-old son. An afternoon dash through the wooded ravine behind Paul Ryan's house in Janesville, Wis. ABC's Jonathan Karl reports that these were just some of the things Mitt Romney's campaign did to keep the world from knowing the presumptive Republican presidential nominee decided to pick Ryan as his running mate. Beginning in April, Romney aide Beth Myers and a team of lawyers extensively vetted several possible vice presidential candidates, but, in the end, Ryan was only candidate Romney met in person to discuss the job. Read Jon Karl's cloak-and-dagger backstory: http://abcn.ws/MP5SsB

PASSED OVER: PORTMAN AND PAWLENTY: ABC News' Gregory Simmons asked vice presidential short-lister, Ohio Sen. Portman in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday if he was disappointed. After a long pause, Portman answered: "Well, I'll just say what I've been saying. That I'm happy where I am. I do feel fortunate to be where I am. I really do. And I've said from the outset I think I can help him where I am." And on "This Week" ABC's George Stephanopoulos asked former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty whether he had any hard feelings about being passed over: "I'm excited for the ticket," Pawlenty told George. He added, "I didn't support Governor Romney because I expected to be vice president. I didn't get something I didn't expect." Regarding Ryan, Pawlenty said the Wisconsin congressman had a "clear, specific vision" and an "adult approach to solving the nation's problems."

FROM PALIN, WITH LOVE. Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin posted a note of congratulations on her Facebook wall last night - from one running mate to another: "Congratulations to Mitt Romney on his choice of Congressman Paul Ryan as his running mate. President Obama has declared that this election is about 'two fundamentally different visions' for America. Goodness, he's got that right. Our country cannot afford four more years of Barack Obama's fundamentally flawed vision. We must now look to this new team, the Romney/Ryan ticket, to provide an alternate vision of an America that is fiscally responsible, strong, and prosperous - an America that understands and is proud of her exceptional place in the world and will respect those who fight to secure that exceptionalism, which includes keeping our promises to our veterans." http://on.fb.me/NqQcZ3

THE NOTE:

The honeymoon is over.

Almost as soon as Mitt Romney announced Paul Ryan as his vice presidential pick yesterday, the walls had already started closing in on him with both Democrats and Republicans pushing from either side to define him in ways that suit their conflicting purposes.

To the Obama campaign and the president's allies, "it's a pick that's meant to thrill the most strident voices in the Republican Party, but it's one that should trouble everybody else," as Obama senior adviser David Axelrod told ABC's George Stephanopoulos on "This Week." http://abcn.ws/RDLHgu

To Republicans - especially those that had been vocally advocating for Romney to pick Ryan in recent days - the Wisconsin congressman's selection is being seen as a big boost for the GOP presidential ticket.

"It remakes the race," Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan said on the "This Week" roundtable this morning. "It recasts things - it gives a different heft to the entire race."

While not nearly as risky as then-candidate John McCain's decision to tap little-known Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin four years ago, Romney's decision to make Ryan his No. 2 lends an air of boldness that many Republicans believed to be lacking from the campaign thus far.

And while Ryan may never be able to draw the crowds of thousands upon thousands that Palin commanded in 2008, a new, amped-up energy level was already apparent among the GOP voters who turned out to see Romney and Ryan in their first joint appearances together up and down the state of Virginia yesterday.

And the Romney campaign was touting the fact that they raised $3.5 million online in the first 24 hours after yesterday's announcement, which took place in front of the USS Wisconsin in Norfolk, Va.

For their part, Democrats are wasting no time in casting Ryan as a "right wing ideologue" who wants to put an end to Medicare as we know it.

"This was a defining choice for Mitt Romney," Axelrod told Stephanopoulos. "And now it's actually a clarifying choice for the American people."

ABC political analyst Cokie Roberts put it this way: "It is a bold choice," she said, "but bold is not necessarily wise."

RYAN COMES OUT SWINGING. After one day on the trail with Mitt Romney, Rep. Paul Ryan is already talking a big game on behalf of the newly minted ticket, pledging: "We're going to win this campaign." "We've got the wind behind us, I'm really excited about this race," Ryan said aboard a charter flight from Virginia to North Carolina last night, ABC's Emily Friedman reports. "Exciting day, lot of energy, big day, it's now two on two instead of two on one. This is good," Romney said. "They've got someone else to pick on too," he added, pointing at Ryan. "It was a big day for me. I'm sure it was for Paul. It was just great to have his family with us, some of my family, exciting day, very big start and feeling very encouraged. The energy throughout Virginia was very exciting, really a terrific day," Romney added. Romney also mentioned that he was pleased that now that he has a running mate, they can split their time and double their efforts. "So I'm excited it also means we'll be able to go to different states at different times and energize our colleagues and hopefully bring some people across the aisle to support our team," Romney said. http://abcn.ws/RJJotQ

GOING SOLO: On Monday, Vice Presidential candidate Paul Ryan will drop by the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines, Iowa at 1 p.m. CT. It will be his first solo event after being named as Romney's running mate.

GUESS WHO'S COMING TO IOWA: From the Obama campaign: "On Monday, August 13, President Obama will kick-off a three-day bus tour across Iowa with grassroots events in Council Bluffs and Boone, Iowa. The President will discuss the choice in this election between two fundamentally different visions of how to create an economy built to last and restore middle-class economic security. .. On Tuesday August 14, President Obama will continue his three day bus tour through Iowa with grassroots events in Oskaloosa, Marshalltown and Waterloo. ? On Wednesday, August 15, President Obama will end his three day bus tour through Iowa with grassroots events in Dubuque and Davenport. First Lady Michelle Obama will be joining the President at both grassroots events."

HOW THE BIGGEST SECRET IN POLITICS STAYED THAT WAY:

-'A BASEBALL HAT AND SUNGLASSES': On Aug. 1 Mitt Romney informed Beth Myers that he had decided Ryan would be his running mate, according to ABC's Jonathan Karl, Emily Friedman and Arlette Saenz. Romney then called Ryan and asked him to come to Boston for a meeting on Aug. 5. Instead of flying directly to Boston, where he might be seen arriving in the city where Romney has his campaign headquarters, Ryan flew from Chicago into Hartford's Bradley Airport. To keep from being recognized, he wore casual clothes, a baseball hat and sunglasses. "We sent my 19-year-old son to pick him up," Myers said. Myers son Curt shuttled Ryan from Hartford to Myers' home in Brookline, Mass., driving the car right into her garage before Ryan got out. Ryan had lunch with Myers' family while Romney drove in from Wolfboro, N.H. - also entering her home through the garage. At Myers' dining room table Romney and Ryan met alone for one hour - the one and only meeting Romney had to discuss the job with a potential candidate. Romney offered the the position and Ryan accepted. http://abcn.ws/MP5SsB

-'I KNOW THOSE WOODS': After Friday's memorial service for the victims of the Sikh temple shooting, reporters saw Ryan get dropped off at his home by his aide Andy Speth. He walked in his front door, but then proceeded to sneak out his back door, through his backyard and into a wooded ravine behind his home. Ryan was then picked up by the house at the other end of the woods. "I know those woods like the back of my hand," Ryan told reporters Saturday night on Romney's campaign plane. "So it wasn't too hard to walk through them. So I just went out my backdoor went through the gully in the woods I grew up playing in. I walked past the tree that has my own tree fort I built back there." http://abcn.ws/MP5SsB

-LAST SUPPER: APPLEBEES. Instead of flying out of Milwaukee or Chicago Friday, Ryan was whisked to the airport in Waukegan, Ill., where a private plane was waiting to take Ryan and his family to Elizabeth City, N,C., at 5 p.m. Ryan, his family, Myers and a handful of top aides spent Friday night at the Fairfield Inn in Elizabeth City, where they ordered take-out from Applebees for dinner. As the campaign announced the vice presidential announcement would happen the next morning, Myers turned off her phone and went to bed. With a single Secret Service agency along, Ryan and others drove, unnoticed, to the USS Wisconsin in Norfolk for the announcement. http://abcn.ws/MP5SsB

AN EARLY CLUE FROM INSIDE ROMNEY H.Q.: ABC News received an advance clue from a source inside Romney campaign headquarters on Thursday. On the board that lists Romney's whereabouts, the candidate's Friday schedule had mysteriously changed overnight. Up until Wednesday the board read - "Office Time" - for Romney on Friday, but by mid-morning on Thursday that had changed. "Office Time" was erased and replaced by the words "Sikh Service." Next to that notation were three letters, "OTR," which in campaign speak, typically stands for "off the record." Ryan was the only one of the vice presidential short-listers to attend Friday's memorial service in Wisconsin for the victims of the Sikh Temple shootings. Romney's son, Tagg, also attended the service, http://abcn.ws/POCf5e

INTERNAL ROMNEY CAMPAIGN TALKING POINTS HINT AT BUDGET DIFFERENCES . Does Mitt Romney's selection of Paul Ryan as his running mate mean that the former Massachusetts governor will embrace the Wisconsin congressman's budget plan? Not exactly, according to a set of internal talking points produced by the Romney campaign and obtained by ABC News' Michael Falcone. "Gov. Romney applauds Paul Ryan for going in the right direction with his budget," according to the talking points, "and as president he will be putting together his own plan for cutting the deficit and putting the budget on a path to balance." The memo includes responses to anticipated Obama campaign attacks, key messages about Ryan as well as "questions and answers" about the Romney-Ryan ticket. For example, "Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan have different views on some policy areas - like Medicare spending, entitlement reform, labor, etc. - do you think those differences are going to hurt or help?" The answer the campaign provides: "Of course they aren't going to have the same view on every issue. But they both share the view that this election is a choice about two fundamentally different paths for this country. ? So, while you might find an issue or two where they might not agree, they are in complete agreement on the direction that they want to lead America." http://abcn.ws/P1XQvd

ROMNEY ADVISER ED GILLESPIE WEIGHS IN in an interview with CNN's Candy Crowley this morning: "As Governor Romney has made clear, if the Romney - I'm sorry, if the Ryan budget had come to his desk as president, he would have signed it, of course. And one of the reasons that he chose Paul Ryan was for Congressman Ryan's willingness to put forward innovative solutions in a budget. At the same time, it is the Romney/Ryan ticket, and as president, President Romney will be putting forward his own budget. But in terms of, for example, the Medicare proposal that Senator Wyden and Congressman Ryan have put together, and the Wyden/Ryan plan, that is something that Governor Romney agrees is an approach we need to take."

WHAT DOES RYAN PICK MEAN FOR THE HOUSE AND SENATE? So, how do strategists who are tasked with advising their candidates in House and Senate races view the Paul Ryan pick? ABC News Political Director Amy Walter writes: Most Democrats we talked with were giddy about the pick. Even hours after Ryan's selection had been announced, one Democratic strategist was still in disbelief calling it the "best pick possible for us." This same strategist, who was at House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's Annual issues conference in Napa Valley, California, said donors and members of Congress in attendance were "pumped" about the Ryan pick. "This election becomes a referendum," said this advisor. "Balance the budget the right way by protecting Medicare. Or stand with Romney-Ryan - who would further burden seniors and the middle class. It is a disastrous pick for congressional Republicans." However, one long-time Democratic consultant warned Democrats not to get too confident. The fact that Ryan has teamed up with Democrat Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon to outline a plan to tackle Medicare reform, said this consultant, complicates Democrats' plans to turn Ryan into a partisan boogeyman. http://abcn.ws/P1XQvd

BUT?. At least one Republican consultant we reached out to told us that he worries that every time Republicans are talking about Medicare, "they are not talking about jobs and the economy." An issue, of course, that Republicans have long held will not only define this race, but sink Obama. When asked what he thinks of the Ryan pick, another GOP strategist who is involved in House and Senate races tells me simply "not helpful. Instead of referendum election we now get a choice."

ABC NEWS ANALYSIS:

-MATTHEW DOWD: 'MOTIVATE THE BASE' This Ryan pick isn't going to help close the gap with Latino voters. This isn't going to persuade suburban, middle class moms to support the ticket. This pick is an acknowledgement on the Romney campaign's part that they see their only path to victory as motivating their base. We have seen some evidence of this effort to motivate the base from the tactics of the Romney campaign over the last few months, but I think this pick is a clear signal that this is their strategy for the remaining days ahead. And I don't think they will be subtle any more about it. I think you will see analysis from them that they can win this election without increasing support among Latinos or by having progressive social appeals to suburban moms. I think they have decided that a lesson learned about base motivation from Bush's 2004 race is applicable in 2012, and it isn't surprising since many of their key staff worked on that campaign. http://abcn.ws/POCf5e

-TERRY MORAN: WILL ROMNEY BE OVERSHADOWED? Conventional wisdom holds that veeps don't determine elections; voters vote the top of the ticket. But has there ever been a vice-presidential pick whose ideas/ideology so overshadowed the presidential nominee's? Has any presidential nominee ever essentially run on his vice-president's ideas? Ronald Reagan almost picked Gerald Ford to mollify moderates in 1980. But he balked when Ford insisted Henry Kissinger return as Secretary of State. Reagan was his own man politically; he knew what he was about and so did everyone else. Not sure you can say the same about Romney. Paul Ryan, then, is an unusual pick historically. Romney is in uncharted waters as the nominee, having a running mate who some will say overshadows him ideologically. How Romney demonstrates convincing leadership of his own ticket may be one of the key tests of his candidacy in this campaign. http://abcn.ws/MOHOX2

-AMY WALTER: ON WISCONSIN. Romney is the nominee and can distance himself or attach himself as much as he wants to Ryan's positions. He is now the boss and Ryan is his employee. Even so, there's little doubt that the Democrats will do all they can to make sure he's attached at Ryan's hip. As for the contention that Ryan helps Romney in the Electoral College, that is a huge assumption that is nowhere worthy of the risk in picking him in the first place. First, winning Wisconsin and its 10 electoral votes is not necessary for Romney to win the White House. Winning Ohio and Florida are. Moreover, Ryan's image in Wisconsin is as solid as it is because he's never been seriously challenged electorally. He's easily won re-election to his southern Wisconsin district for the last 14 years. And, he's never run a statewide race.

-RICK KLEIN: 'IDEOLOGICAL BATTLE' The choice of Ryan is simultaneously designed to be satisfying to the Republican base and provocative to much of the rest of the country - in short: bold, brash, and possibly explosive. Ryan's selection will ignite a major ideological battle between the two sides, the very fight the nation has been poised to have since the Tea Party takeover of 2010. Ryan has been perhaps the most articulate messenger for a major rethinking of the federal government's relationship to its citizens, and gives Romney immediate policy heft. The biggest shift could come in the campaign's overarching themes. A campaign that has at times seemed to be about nothing will now be about something big, or more accurately a series of very big things. http://abcn.ws/PLWWif

THE BUZZ:

PAUL RYAN: MILLIONAIRE. "With business investments and a family inheritance, Rep. Paul D. Ryan of Wisconsin and his wife have accumulated millions of dollars in assets and generated income last year well above his congressional salary, according to his most recent financial disclosure statement," The Los Angeles Times' Michael Finnegan reports. "Mitt Romney's newly announced running mate reported assets in the range of $2 million to $7.7 million. The largest was the interest that his wife, Janna, holds in a trust resulting from the 2010 death of her mother, Prudence Little. Her interest in the trust falls in the range of $1 million to $5 million, Ryan reported. Ryan also reported investment income that, along with a distribution from the inheritance, supplemented his $174,000 congressional salary - somewhere between $168,000 and $1.2 million. ? The report shows that Ryan has spread his wealth among a wide variety of investments. Ryan reported partnership income from an Oklahoma mining business, Ava O Limited Co., and royalties from the Oklahoma gravel rights of Blondie & Brownie. He also reported interests in mineral rights, vacant land, a cabin and a timber business in Oklahoma." http://lat.ms/NY6gPz

JON KARL REMINDS: "As a candidate for Congress, Paul Ryan has released financial disclosure forms for years, but he has never released his tax returns. We know that Ryan turned over "several years" of tax returns to the Romney campaign during the vice presidential vetting process. We have asked the Romney campaign if any of those returns will be made public. No answer yet. Dick Cheney released ten years of returns after he was named as George W. Bush's running mate in 2000. Sarah Palin released two years in 2008."

WILL RYAN FORCE ROMNEY INTO A BUDGET BALLET? "In naming Ryan, Romney wed himself far more closely to proposals that have made the 42-year-old House Budget Committee chairman a hero to tea party and other conservative activists and anathema to Democrats," notes the Associated Press' Tom Raum. "Enshrined in budgets twice passed by the Republican House but so far rejected by the Democratic-run Senate, Ryan's proposals would rein in federal domestic spending, lower tax rates and overhaul safety-net programs like Medicare and Medicaid for senior citizens, the disabled and the poor. Previously, Romney praised the Ryan budget in general terms, calling it in line with his own ideas, 'bold and exciting' and even 'marvelous.' But he hasn't given it heavy emphasis in his campaign speeches nor singled out specifics. Romney's own economic prescriptions have lacked detail in many areas. But from now on, he'll be compelled to defend what is suddenly a 'Romney-Ryan' plan full of belt-tightening, smaller government proposals." http://apne.ws/NvWSDu

BEFORE THE PICK: LOOKING BACK AT THE MITT AND PAUL SHOW. Over the past six months the Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan seem to have developed a close personal relationship, ABC's Shushannah Walshe and Emily Friedman reports. Mitt Romney is famous for sometimes having a hard time connecting on the stump, but that's not the case with the 42 year old congressman. They seem to have a similar head for data and policy and a comfort level that has turned into a fast friendship from their time campaigning together since he endorsed Romney in March. http://abcn.ws/Mof71D

-In Wisconsin in on primary day the two stopped by a sub shop to hand out sandwiches. The two stood behind the counter and doled out sandwiches to supporters, playing off one another and posing for photos. On April Fool's Day in a video that went viral, Ryan was involved in an elaborate prank with Romney. The former Massachusetts governor bounded in with a smile on his face expecting a crowd and he got an empty room. The two fell apart laughing and the body language reveals an obviously relaxed, buddy relationship.

-On their Wisconsin tour together, Ryan boasted that his picks for the NCAA tournament were so good, he knew he was right about picking Romney. "Now, I'm feeling pretty good about my picks these days, because when I filled out my NCAA brackets, I picked Kentucky against Kansas in the championship game," Ryan said. "I did have Marquette and Wisconsin going pretty far. You know, everybody made it to the Sweet Sixteen, but I did pick Kentucky to win, and man, those guys really dominated last night, but when I filled out my ballot here in Wisconsin, I picked who I think is gonna be the next President of the United States. I picked Mitt Romney."

-When the two were on the stump together, the relationship was obvious. Romney was comfortable with the congressman taking the stage and he would even sit down to listen during town halls when Ryan was talking. "What I see in Mitt Romney are the kinds of skills, tools, character attributes that you need in a leader! He makes decisions. He doesn't pander," Ryan said at the Reagan Library in May. "He is going to beat Barack Obama and I think that we are going to save this country."

MEET MRS. RYAN. Politico's M.J. Lee reports: "Janna Little was a tax attorney for a prestigious consulting firm in Washington, D.C., when she swept one of the most eligible bachelors on the Hill, Rep. Paul Ryan, off his feet and off the market. A native Oklahoman and graduate of Wellesley College and George Washington University law school, Janna left the nation's capital after marrying Ryan and moved to his hometown, Janesville, Wisc., to raise a family. Those who know Janna describe her as a quiet and gracious woman focused on taking care of her children. 'She's a very soft spoken, elegant, and lady-like. Very family-oriented. Always with her kids, always here picking up food for her family,' Edmund Halabi, owner of the Italian House in Janesville where the Ryans dine, told POLITICO. 'Just warm, easygoing, not upfront in the public arena. You can see her on the TV, she really stays back and doesn't attract much attention to herself. Just an amazing lady-like figure.' Now, the 43-year-old's status as a stay-at-home mom who lives largely out of the political limelight is about to change." http://politi.co/POr0JV

THE ALSO RANS:

- PORTMAN OPENS UP ABOUT GETTING THE CALL FROM ROMNEY. Senator Rob Portman, R-OH, learned from Gov. Mitt Romney via telephone Friday evening that he was not picked to be the GOP running mate, ABC's Gregory Simmons reports. "He couldn't have been more gracious," Portman said of their interaction. "And I told him I'm really excited about the prospect of working with him as president and implementing the changes that are definitely needed in this county on economic and fiscal issues." Portman said that despite being passed over, he will continue spearhead to Romney's Ohio presidential effort. "It was a great phone conversation overall and I really appreciate him giving me the heads up," Portman said. ABC News asked Portman if he was disappointed. After a long pause, Portman answered: "Well, I'll just say what I've been saying. That I'm happy where I am. I do feel fortunate to be where I am. I really do. And I've said from the outset I think I can help him where I am." Portman emphasized again he thinks he can make an impact through his work in the U.S. Senate, that he loved his family and Ohio and that he really is happy where he is. "I was honored to be a part of the mix. There. That's the first time I've said that," he said confirming for the first time that he had in fact been vetted by the Romney campaign. http://abcn.ws/Monjip

PAWLENTY: 'NOT DISAPPOINTED' Tim Pawlenty, joined by his wife Mary in New Hampshire, told ABC's Shushannah Walshe he wasn't disappointed by the news. "I didn't enter this thinking I would be the V.P. candidate so I'm not disappointed," Pawlenty said. "I'm excited about his candidacy and I'm excited about having him as president." Pawlenty said he did not get a call from Romney Friday, but he did know his choice. Top Republicans tell ABC News it is Rep. Paul Ryan. The 42 year old is the chairman of the House Budget Committee. Reporters have been following Pawlenty's every move for weeks and as he walked into a Manchester, N.h. hotel he said, "Now you can get on with life." His wife, dressed in a bright teal dress, added with a smile, "And you can stop following us." http://abcn.ws/PLmgoq

NOTED: A TAXING QUESTION. On ABC's "This Week," George Stephanopoulos pressed Tim Pawlenty on how many years of tax returns he released to the Romney campaign during the vice presidential vetting process. Romney has refused to make public more than two years of tax returns ahead of the November election.

STEPHANOPOULOS: "How many years of tax returns did you provide to the Romney campaign?"

PAWLENTY: "I don't remember the exact number. Several years."

STEPHANOPOULOS: "Several years?so more than two?"

PAWLENTY: "Well, we don't get into the details of the vetting process. I gave him a bunch of tax returns. I don't remember the exact number."
