Republicans highlight your $52,000 share of the national debt

(Office of Speaker John Boehner)

Fifty-two thousand dollars could, among other things, buy you NFL season tickets for nearly 67 years and groceries for seven years, and make for a hefty down payment on a house. So Republicans argue in a new infographic released by Speaker John Boehner's office Wednesday morning, part of their effort to highlight Democratic spending amid the U.S.'s growing national debt.

According to the chart, if the $16 trillion national debt were divided among every man, woman and child, each person would receive $52,000?an amount Republicans are highlighting on Wednesday, the 1,400th day since the Democratic-controlled Senate passed a budget.

President Barack Obama has been publicly pressuring House Republicans to raise taxes on the nation's wealthiest and some corporations as part of a budget deal. In the absence of a budget passed by Congress, federal agencies will face a sequester?across-the-board spending cuts?March 1.

Republicans issued a statement along with Wedneday's graphic calling on Democrats to do their part to avoid the sequester.

"Republicans voted twice to replace the president?s sequester with smarter spending cuts and reforms. And?for the third year in a row?the House will pass a budget that promotes economic growth and addresses our debt crisis. Now we need Senate Democrats and President Obama to do the same," Republicans state on Boehner's website.

Republicans will be using the hashtags #1400days and #NoDemBudget on Twitter Wednesday to promote their message.

Obama warns spending cuts could idle shipbuilder

(AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)

(AP) ? President Barack Obama is arguing that looming government-wide spending cuts could idle military resources like naval aircraft carriers, while Republicans are criticizing the president for taking his arguments outside Washington instead of staying to work out a plan before Friday's deadline.

The president planned to appear Tuesday at Virginia's largest industrial employer, Newport News Shipbuilding, which would be affected by cuts to naval spending. Obama warned Monday that if the so-called sequester goes into effect later this week, the company's "workers will sit idle when they should be repairing ships, and a carrier sits idle when it should be deploying to the Persian Gulf."

Obama urged Congress to compromise to avoid the cuts, but there has been no indication the White House and congressional Republicans are actively negotiating a deal. The last known conversation between Obama and GOP leaders was last week, and there have been no in-person meetings between the parties this year.

Obama wants to replace the sequester with a package of targeted cuts and tax increases, while Republican leaders insist the savings should come from reduced spending alone.

Washington Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, chair of the House Republican Conference, criticized Obama for traveling to southern Virginia rather than up the street to Capitol Hill to come up with a solution.

"We need the president to stop campaigning for higher taxes, come back here to Washington, D.C., and lead," McMorris Rodgers said during a news conference Monday with GOP leaders.

"We're very concerned about the impact of the sequester. This was President Obama's idea," she said Tuesday in an appearance on "CBS This Morning."

"The Republicans, almost 300 days ago, put forward our plan," she said. "There's a smarter, better way to do it," Rodgers said.

The sequester was designed as an unpalatable fallback, meant to take effect only if a congressional super-committee failed to come up with at least $1 trillion in savings from benefit programs.

The White House has warned the $85 billion in cuts could affect everything from commercial flights to classrooms to meat inspections. The cuts would slash domestic and defense spending, leading to furloughs for hundreds of thousands of workers.

In Virginia alone, the White House says, about 90,000 civilians working for the Defense Department would be furloughed for a cut of nearly $650 million in gross pay. The White House also says the sequester would cancel maintenance of 11 ships in Norfolk, as well as delaying other projects around the area.

The Navy has already delayed a long-planned overhaul of the USS Abraham Lincoln at Newport News Shipbuilding as a result of the budget uncertainty, and other plans call for delaying the construction of other ships.

Obama planned to travel Tuesday with two Virginia congressmen, Democrat Bobby Scott and Republican Scott Rigell.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., offered a potential way out of the stalemate Monday by indicating he was open to raising tax revenue if Obama offered to overhaul big-ticket entitlement programs. Many Republicans say they are done raising revenue after letting taxes on top earners increase in December.

"I'll raise revenue. Will you reform entitlements?" Graham said in a challenge to the president on CNN. "And both together, we'll set aside sequestration in a way that won't disrupt the economy and hurt the Defense Department."

Intel launches dual-core Clover Trail+ mobile Atom processors

Intel launches dualcore Clover Trail mobile Atom processors

Intel teased a dual-core Clover Trail+ earlier this year at CES 2013, and now it's revealed the rest of the story on the new Atom-based mobile processors at MWC 2013 in Barcelona. While based on the same 32nm architecture of the previous Medfield generation, the new Z2580, Z2560 and Z2520 chips will pack dual 2.0GHz, 1.6GHz and 1.2Ghz CPU cores, respectively, along with two PowerVR SGX 544 GPU cores. That should make the new chip a lot more competitive than the previous generation, performance-wise, though battery life may suffer next to 28nm chips from the likes of Qualcomm. Still, Intel says that the new chips will burn less juice at idle than Medfield, meaning cell life could vary widely depending on usage.

On the radio side, Intel's at last bringing support for 42Mbps DC-HSPA+ along with 11.5 Mbps HSUPA cat 7 with its XMM 6360 silicon, but there'll still be no multimode (on-chip) LTE support for now. However, it also launched its new XMM 7160 radio as a separate chip, supporting 15 LTE bands along with HSPA+ and saying that it'll appear on its upcoming 22nm SoC chips -- which the company said were on track to arrive by the end of the year. Finally, Intel flaunted a new Clover Trail+ reference design, featuring a Z2580 CPU, 2GB of RAM, a max 256GB(!) of NAND, WUXGA support (1,920 x 1,200) and a rear 16-megapixel camera. Hopefully, there'll be a large battery to go along with all that -- check the PR after the break for more.

Russians investigating adoptee's death in Texas

(AP) ? Russian authorities have blamed "inhuman treatment" for the death of a 3-year-old boy adopted by an American family, but Texas officials say they are still investigating claims that the child was abused before his death.

Russia's Investigative Committee said Monday that it had questions about the death of an adoptee authorities identified as Maxim Kuzmin. The committee is the country's top investigative agency.

Texas Child Protective Services spokesman Patrick Crimmins confirmed the agency had received a report on Jan. 21 of the death of a 3-year-old named Max Shatto, and that the Ector County Sheriff's Office in West Texas was investigating.

Crimmins said CPS had received allegations of physical abuse and neglect, but had not determined whether those allegations were true. Sgt. Gary Duesler, spokesman for the Ector County Sheriff's Office, said no arrests have been made and authorities are waiting for autopsy results.

An obituary for Max Shatto published Jan. 26 by the Midland Reporter-Telegram says he was born on Jan. 9, 2010, in the town of Pskov, near Russia's western border with Estonia. The boy lived with a family in Gardendale, about 350 miles west of Dallas, before his death on Jan. 21, according to the obituary.

The boy's listed adoptive parents, Alan and Laura Shatto, did not return phone messages Monday, though their voicemail message said they would have no comment for media outlets.

The death comes weeks after Russia announced it was banning all American adoptions in retaliation for a new U.S. law targeting alleged Russian human-rights violators. The ban also reflects lingering resentment over the 60,000 Russian children adopted by Americans in the past two decades, of which at least 19 have died.

Russian Foreign Ministry official Konstantin Dolgov said in a statement that the boy's death was "yet another case of inhuman treatment of a Russian child adopted by American parents."

Duesler said he could not immediately confirm or deny Russian allegations of abuse. Most U.S. government offices were closed Monday in observance of a federal holiday.

Dolgov also accused the U.S. Department of State of not helping Russian consular officials investigate the death. A State Department official said the government is aware of the case and "takes very seriously the welfare of children, particularly children who have been adopted from other countries."

"We will continue to assist the Russian Embassy and consulate officials in making contact with the appropriate authorities in Texas," said the State Department official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to speak on the record about the matter.

Crimmins said the Russian consulate had contacted Child Protective Services.

PST: Messi scores goals No. 300, 301 with Barcelona

Two weeks after knocking off Real Madrid, Granada positioned themselves for an even bigger upset when they took a 26th minute lead today on visiting Barcelona. But after taking halftime to think it over, Lionel Messi, who came into Saturday?s match with 299 career all-competition goals, decided Bar?a wasn?t going to replicate their rivals? error. Thanks to his second half double, Messi brought Barcelona back for a 2-1 victory.

The double raises Messi?s season total to 48 goals in 36 games. His 37 league tallies are 13 more than second-best Cristiano Ronaldo. He?s?also scored 13 times (in 11 games) since the turn of the calendar.

Messi?s first came with Granada packed deep into their own end just after halftime. Cesc Fabregas let loose from 23 yards, and when Granada goalkeeper To?o blocked the shot back in front of goal. With Messi having peeled away from the defense after Fabregas released the shot, he was in perfect position for the put back:

Messi?s second could have been a response to Gareth Bale?s mid-week golazo, with a direct kick from the middle of the field giving the Barcelona star his choice for posts from just over 24 yards out. He chose left:

The win leaves Barcelona 15 points up on Atl?tico Madrid, who play at Real Valladolid tomorrow. They have a +53 goal difference and is on pace for 126 goals and a record 103 points.

They also take on Mario Balotelli and Milan on Wednesday in UEFA Champions League.

Activist group says hundreds kidnapped in Syria

BEIRUT (AP) ? An activist group says pro-government gunmen have kidnapped more than 300 people in northwestern Syria in retaliation for the abduction of 42 Shiite Muslims this week.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the tit-for-tat kidnappings in predominantly Sunni Muslim Idlib province could trigger sectarian clashes in the area.

The Observatory said the 42 Shiites, mainly women and children, were snatched Thursday from a bus traveling from the Shiite villages of Foua and Kfarya to the capital Damascus.

Observatory director Rami Abdul-Rahman said Saturday it was not clear who kidnapped the Shiites.

The U.N. Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Zainab Hawa Bangura, called for the release of the women.

She said "allegations of abduction and rape of women and girls by armed groups have been received."

Glamstand tickets still available for Pride Parade

glamstand.jpg
Tickets are still available for the best seats in the house for Saturday?s Auckland Pride Parade, the GABA GlamStand, where guests can enjoy a great view of the floats, plus food and drinks, and mingle with VIPs.

The initiative will benefit the Gay Auckland Business Association?s (GABA) Charitable Trust, and tickets are $75 for GABA members and $85 for non-members.

They come with a seat and a view of the parade, a glass of bubbles on arrival and catered food.

GABA President Michael Richardson says GABA is very happy to be working with the Auckland Pride Board and to be involved with the new Pride festival in a meaningful way.

?The GlamStand will provide grand-stand seating for GABA members and invited guests including VIPs. The format is consistent with other pride parades and similar events run internationally with great success.

?We believe there will be demand for high-quality seating and facilities and this is an opportunity to enhance the profile of Auckland Pride, GABA, and the wider gay community.?

VIP guests will include US Ambassador David Huebner and his partner Duane McWaine, Auckland Mayor Len Brown and his deputy Penny Hulse, marriage equality campaigning MP Louisa Wall, Marilyn Waring, MPs Nikki Kaye, Jacinda Ardern and Paul Hutchison.

This year?s Auckland Pride Parade theme is ?One Community? and organisers say the crowds can expect explosions of colour, flashing sequins, over the top drag queens, hot toned bodies, wild dancing, fantastic music and even a full choir performing live on the back of a truck.

An interactive map to delight your inner 8-year-old

At some point in every traveler?s life, they come across a map or place name that brings out their inner eight-year-old: Intercourse, Pa.; Beaver, Okla., Lake Titicaca.

Now, you don?t have to peruse a big stack of individual maps to get your giggles. Recently released online, the interactive Vaguely Rude Names of the World map provides a humorous (and possibly NSFW) global atlas of places that share their names with body parts, bodily functions and intimate activities you can do by yourself or with friends.

Trust us, Brest (France) and Slut (Sweden) are among the few we can mention here.

The map is the brainchild of Gary Gale, a self-proclaimed ?geek with a life? whose own love of maps was sparked the first time he saw a map of the London Underground as a young boy. Since then he?s turned that passion into a career in geography and cartography for major tech companies around the world.

The VRNM, on the other hand, owes its existence to a friend?s curiosity about Gale?s file of place names, an offhand suggestion that he create a map of the naughtier ones and a transatlantic flight in which Gale says he ?could sleep, watch the same movie three times or write a bit of code.?

Opting for the latter, he uploaded the result to the Internet on Feb. 6, where it?s now received more than 660,000 unique visits.

?I had no expectation that anybody would like it, let alone come and see it. Yet it seems to have hit a chord in some way,? he told NBC News. ?People have been emailing me and saying that this or that place is in their neighborhood and it should be on the map.?

According to Gale, the map has less to do with childish humor than it does the uniquely British approach to comedy, which he says combines sarcasm, self-deprecation and ?an element of prudish, Victorian rebellion.?

Then again, when you?re talking about places like Crap, Albania; Poo, India, and multiple Climaxes (Georgia and Colorado), it?s clear that sophomoric humor respects no boundaries whatsoever.

As for those who might be more offended than amused, Gale points out that there?s nothing gratuitously profane about the project. Instead, many of the names simply show that words in one language can have very different meanings in others.

?These places exist and you can?t just rewrite the names of places because they don?t happen to fit into your particular worldview,? he said.

As for Gale, his favorites are more PG-rated than anything else.

?They?re not the ones that have a straightforward correlation to words that are universally accepted as not-so-nice,? he told NBC News. ?It?s the ones that sound vaguely rude, places like Upper Piddle.?

Frankly, it?s hard to see how anyone could get offended by a name that recalls a dog going wee-wee. And while it may not be laugh-out-loud funny, either, it did make us titter.

Senate Majority Leader Scolds GOP For Unprecedented Hagel Obstruction: ?What A Shame?

Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV)

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) today filed a cloture motion on Chuck Hagel?s nomination to be the next Defense Secretary, saying he was forced to file the motion ? which effectively means that 60 votes will be required for an up or down vote on Hagel ? because Senate Armed Services Committee Ranking Member James Inhofe (R-OK) and other Republicans ?aren?t willing to consider? the Nebraska Republican?s nomination.

?This is the first time in the history of our country that a presidential nominee for Secretary of Defense has been filibustered,? Reid said on the Senate floor. ?What a shame.? Watch the clip:

The cloture vote is scheduled for Friday and It?s unlikely Senate Republicans will be able to derail Hagel?s confirmation. At this point, their obstruction and delay appears to be just that: obstruction and delay.

But it?s worth remembering who wants Chuck Hagel to be the next Secretary of Defense ? former top military and defense officials from both parties, 50 former U.S. ambassadors, veterans and military families, a bipartisan group of former national security advisers, and the country?s most prominent newspapers and journalists ? and who doesn?t: James Inhofe, Ted Cruz, Bill Kristol, Rick Santorum, Elliott Abrams, and Jennifer Rubin. You do the math.

Android 4.2.2 rolling out to 'yakju' Galaxy Nexus, but here's a better idea

4.2.2

The Android 4.2.2 update has now started to roll out to the various "yakju" Galaxy Nexus phones. If you're not familiar with the term, yakju is a tag placed on the versions of the GSM Galaxy Nexus that were sold through channels other than Google Play. Phones sold from Google Play were labeled "takju," and on the software side the only difference is the inclusion of Google Wallet. The thing that matters here is that takju devices have historically received updates well before yakju devices -- today's news of a yakju OTA this close to the takju version is a rare sight.

Why am I telling you all this? We now have manual download link for the yakju GNex, and people (maybe even you) are going to be digging out USB cables and manually updating. I have a better idea for folks who want to get their hands a little dirty at the command line -- flash your phone to the takju version so there's no wait for the next OTA.

Any GSM Galaxy Nexus can run it, Google Wallet is baked right into the ROM (important if you're in the U.S.) and it puts you on the same software and update schedule as the phones from Google Play. It's also kind of fun. The down side is that you'll be starting from scratch, but a fresh install always feels good.

The method is covered right here if you're interested, and I promise that if you're able to manually update your yakju phone, you can flash the takju software and manually update as well. If you don't feel like fooling with it, that's cool, too. Here's the manual download link for the yakju 4.2.2 OTA, and you can sideload it with one of the existing methods. Hit the forums if you run into trouble.

PST: Stories are tumbling out of Red Bull Arena

At some point last year a few soccer journos were sitting around, talking over a soda pop or two. It?s what we do best; you gotta play to your strengths.

The subject wheel finally landed on the New York Red Bulls and someone (sorry I can?t remember who ? proper credit and all) said, ?Oh, the stories are there, and they?ll all start coming out soon enough.?

That day has apparently arrived.

During Red Bulls media day Monday in Harrison, former manager Hans Backe and (more than likely) Rafa Marquez became the favorite punching bags as guys like Thierry Henry, Tim Cahill (pictured) and Heath Pearce began pulling back the curtain on why such a fabulously talented team never found its potential, hovering habitually between ?average? and ?just above average.?

Backe was, let?s say, a ?less respected? figure inside the locker room. (In fairness, it is impossible to know who was making some of the high-profile decisions, Backe or someone above him.)

Said defender Heath Pearce, who was advocating new manager Mike Petke, but saying a lot in his comparison:

If guys can jog around training and get away with it, then what?s going to happen in the games where you need guys in the 90th minute to make plays? From the ground level up, accountability is going to be a major factor for us. Them enabling us to hold each other to that level, with (the coaching staff?s) support, is going to be a big thing for us.?

Advocacy for Petke was a big theme. The players love his dedication the job and the organization. Again, you wonder is that?s more about Petke or more about the previous regime?

And then this: Credit to Cahill, who hasn?t been in the United States for a full year, for already figuring out what inexplicably escapes so very many men in MLS corner offices: that American coaches have a better opportunity to grasp the peculiarities and vagaries unique to MLS. I?ve been banging that drum for years.

It doesn?t take a rocket scientist to see what happened last season. It seemed very open and messy. There was no stability, whereas now there?s stability. There?s Petke.?

Said Cahill of the search that wandered first in Europe ? and where serendipity may have ultimately intervened, saving the Red Bulls from themselves when the chosen coaching accent couldn?t come to terms or couldn?t get a visa or whatever:

I just kept hearing names about European coaches. It?s hard to bring in European coaches that understand the league and the structure ? what?s going to be best to build a team.?

There?s even more in the piece from Brian Straus linked above, including some shots at Dwayne De Rosario, who was even more to the point in assessing his brief run at Red Bull Arena.

In U.S., shark attacks on humans in 2012 highest since 2000

MIAMI (Reuters) - Shark attacks on humans in the United States hit their highest level in more than a decade last year, but researchers say it does not mean sharks are getting more aggressive.

The United States recorded 53 shark attacks in 2012, matching the highest yearly total since the same number was registered in 2000, according to researchers at the University of Florida.

The number of U.S. attacks in 2012 marked an increase from 31 reported in 2011, although worldwide, the number was only slightly higher at 80 compared to 78 in 2011, according to the university's annual International Shark Attack File report released on Monday.

George Burgess, who leads the effort to compile the report, said shark attacks fell during the last decade, a trend he said was likely tied to economic reasons.

"I think the economy has played a major role in the sense with the downturn in the economy, fewer people had the ability to take holidays and visit the beach," he said.

Last year, "the upturn in the economy may have helped," Burgess said. "I think more folks went ahead with their vacation plans."

In the United States, which typically accounts for about two-thirds of the global total, the highest number was registered in Florida, where there were 26 attacks last year.

The state has a high concentration of sharks because its warm waters are home to species not found in cooler regions.

Hawaii had the second-highest number of attacks in the United States with 10.

Globally, Australia ranked second with 14 attacks, followed by South Africa with four.

There were a total of seven fatalities around the world from shark attacks last year, including three in South Africa and two in Australia.

As in previous years, surfers were the victims of most of the world's attacks at 60 percent, the report said.

Report: Cities have hundreds of empty schools

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Hundreds of schools in the nation's largest cities are sitting empty as education officials struggle to sell these potentially valuable properties that are a drain on school district finances, according to a study released Monday.

In the dozen cities the Pew Charitable Trusts reviewed, some 327 schools were sitting idle last year and for sale. That means those properties ? typically nestled in residential neighborhoods ? are costing districts that still have to keep them secure, insured and heated. Meanwhile, the financially strapped districts are not collecting taxes on some prime real estate to fund the schools that do survive.

"We still have school police officers and engineers in the building to make sure it's not a dangerous location," Philadelphia schools spokeswoman Deirdre Darragh.

But with more parents choosing charter schools or private options, the need for these aging public buildings has shrunk in cities. Pew researchers anticipated the number of for-sale buildings will swell in coming years as school districts consolidate their facilities in response to tighter budgets and more families moving out of the cities and into the suburbs.

In Philadelphia alone, 37 schools are set to be closed next year in what would be one of the nation's largest closings. That follows the sale of 11 buildings already and another six that are on the market.

Nationally, the data foretells a shift as public school officials take on added roles of real estate agent, auctioneer or landlord. Some districts have turned to real estate brokers for help while others have accepted lower bids simply to get the buildings off their books. Some, such as Detroit, manage their real estate marketing internally with two staffers.

"Typically, they're not just set up to sell and manage real estate," said Pew researcher Emily Dowdall.

And it's not always easy to sell these schools, which were built decades ago for very specific uses.

Since 2005, Detroit has either sold or leased 63 of its buildings but still has 124 former schools on the market. A sharp decline in the city's population, as well as a 31 percent growth in charter school enrollment since 2005, prompted the one-time manufacturing hub to overhaul where it is teaching its students.

Detroit is hardly alone.

The District of Columbia has sold or leased 40 of its buildings, largely to charter schools, since 2005. Cincinnati did the same with 27 of its schools. Cleveland has found new uses for 25 of its buildings.

Even so, Cleveland still has 27 up for grabs and bulldozed seven others to turn those sites into parks.

The number of idle buildings does not include properties that the districts are holding on to but are not using. Cleveland, for instance, kept several buildings at the ready to fill in for others they plan to renovate in the future, officials there said.

Even for districts that are able to sell unused buildings, they seldom are getting their full value. For example, Cincinnati auctioned 11 buildings and a piece of land for $3.5 million. The county auditor valued the property at almost $31 million.

Most buildings, Pew found, sell for between $200,000 and $1 million.

Some 42 percent of the schools Pew reviewed found a second act as a charter school. Ohio, Georgia and Washington have laws that require districts to let charter operators make a bid on a closed school before anyone else, easing the way for those schools.

One of biggest challenges for districts looking to unload excess property is that many of these buildings were built to accommodate hundreds of students ? not tenants. And many have been vacant for more than a decade and appear abandoned.

In a few cases, the schools have been completely gutted and transformed. One Detroit school was made into a recording studio. Another in Milwaukee is set to become a community center. In Pittsburgh, one building became a technology center focused on environmentally friendly jobs.

Pew's study looked at school systems in Washington, Atlanta, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit, Kansas City, Mo., Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, St. Louis and Tulsa.

This Qwiki Keeps the Smiles Coming

hen Apple selected Qwiki for iPhone as an Editor's Choice app, I ignored it, then came back to it wondering what the heck it was: The icon has a couple of blocks and maybe a horizontal head shaped like a "Q," which vaguely looks like, well, I'm just not sure. I get more info from most fluffy white clouds.

Flu Activity Decreasing in US

Flu season is still upon us, but it appears to be winding down.

As of Feb. 2, the percentage of people visiting the doctor for flu-like illness in the United States was 3.6 percent, down from 4.2 percent for the week ending Jan. 26, according to the latest numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Nineteen states are reporting high levels of flu activity, down from 24 states the week before, the CDC said. And 13 states are reporting low levels of flu activity, up from four states the week before.

Thirty-eight states are reporting widespread flu activity, down from the 42 states the week before. Widespread flu activity means that more than 50 percent of areas in those states are experiencing flu.

This year's flu season has been particularly bad for the elderly ? of the 8,293 people hospitalized for flu so far, more than half have been 65 or older, the CDC said. [See Why Is This Year's Flu Season So Bad?]

Fifty-nine children have died this flu season, and 14 of these deaths took place from Jan. 26 to Feb. 2.

The best way to protect yourself from the flu is to get a flu shot. People who catch the flu can be treated with antiviral medication, but treatment must begin early, within 48 hours of the start of symptoms. People at high risk for complications from the flu, such as the elderly, should visit their doctor promptly if they experience flu symptoms, including fever, cough, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue, the CDC said.

Pass it on: Overall flu activity in the United States is decreasing, but the flu season isn't over yet.

Christopher Dorner: Big Bear Search Leaves Residents Scared (VIDEO)

LOS ANGELES -- Residents of Big Bear, Calif. were evacuated Thursday as police continued to hunt for suspected murderer Christopher Dorner, a former LAPD police officer and Navy reservist.

Dorner, who allegedly shot three police officers (one fatally) Thursday morning, is suspected to be in the mountain community because his truck was found torched on the side of a road.

Big Bear, about 80 miles from Los Angeles, is a popular ski resort area. When police confirmed that the truck belonged to Dorner, resorts shut down, guests were told to stay in their rooms and Big Bear Unified School District campuses went on lockdown, reports NBC LA.

To make matters more complicated, Bear Mountain and Snow Summit ski resorts happened to be offering a military discount on passes to any military members who showed up in uniform that day, notes the Los Angels Times. Dorner was last seen wearing his military fatigues.

Officers are also conducting a door-to-door search to, San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon told the Associated Press.

The manhunt, coupled with official warnings that Dorner is armed and dangerous, has Southern California residents on edge.

Neil Minami, neighbor to one of Dorner's supposed targets, noted that the suspect's police and military training make the manhunt all the more dangerous.

"He knows a lot of tactics that could make him very invisible," said Minami to AP in the video above."They're taking him serious. You might call it overreacting, but I think its just when guns are involved and people are getting killed, that's just a normal reaction."

Rosine Sorbom, another neighbor, remarked, "It's a shame that so many people have to be scared for their lives because one man is out to get somebody."

In addition to shooting police officers, Dorner is suspected of murdering Cal State Fullerton basketball coach Monica Quan and her fiance Keith Lawrence in Irvine Sunday. Quan is related to someone that Dorner blames for his dismissal from the LAPD -- something he elaborated on in his online manifesto. Police assigned armed guards to all the officers named in Dorner's "manifesto" once it went public.

Angelenos are reacting to the manhunt on Twitter with a mix of fear and tv/movie references. Check out local reactions to the hunt for Christopher Dorner in the slideshow below.
