Boo in London: Boo in Australia - Sydney

Perhaps my best meal of all in Australia was the Italian dinner we had at A Tavola in Darlinghurst, just around the corner from our hotel. In fact, I would go so far as to say I had the best dessert of my life there.

Here it is, I'm working backwards because I can't mention this place without immediately raving about the cremino al cioccolato. Italian meringue topped chocolate mousse, with a layer of soft salted caramel. I was actually lost for words. Served in a little cup and saucer, god, I want it now!

Mains were brilliant too, I chose from the specials, parpadelle con ragu di agrello. Freshly made daily, the pasta was hanging up at the rear of the restaurant, where the kitchen is. Certainly the best pasta dish I've eaten in a restaurant, with a rich slow cooked lamb sauce, this place was such a gem and I need to find a restaurant in London which is up to this level of Italian cooking. Thomas' gnocci was, guess what? The best gnocci I've ever had, with peas and mushrooms.

We were lucky to get in without booking ahead, we were seated along the long communal table and the menu was explained to us in great detail. The wine advise was also spot on, we had a great Sicilian Nero D'avola, perfect with the ragu. Starters of burrata, with grapes and tomatoes, and carpaccio di manzo with beetroot and watercress we interesting combinations too. Served with a light and pillowy focaccia bread.

I can't rave about the place enough, Eugenio Maiale, you're a genius. Can you open a restaurant in London please? Seamlessly moving on to somebody who has....Bill Granger.

I've not been to Bill's in London yet, but I did hit up 1 of his 3 Sydney addresses. My lasting memory of the place is that it was overpriced and the service was crap. This is pretty much in the same vein as what I've read about the Notting Hill venue.

We visited on a Monday so, thankfully, didn't have to face a queue. There's a large communal table, a nice selection of magazines to read and an open kitchen. We kicked things off with lattes and stuck to the 'classic' Granger dishes, sweetcorn fritters, with an extra side of guacamole ($4.50, for that measly portion), and the ricotta hotcakes with banana and honeycomb butter.

Tbh, I'm not the biggest fan of sweet dishes for breakfast so the fritters were my preference of the 2 but I could certainly appreciate the lightness of the hotcakes. I'd love them as a seriously big dessert. The whole thing was a little soured due to the inattentive servers. We were seated by a guy who immediately left the building and about 20 minutes later, we had to go and find someone else to serve us. I'd read similar reports. This is why I've not rushed to try the London branch.

There are a multitude of appealing cafes and bars in the area where we stayed. A walk to Surrey Hills one day took us via the corner of Forbes and Burton Streets, where Forbes & Burton was abuzz. We nabbed the last available table for a lunch to fill up ahead of an afternoon of exploring.

Thomas' pulled pork sandwich with homemade brown sauce, coriander, mint, carrot and rocket was fantastic. Each ingredient detectable between the robust slices of sourdough. These are proper sandwiches.

I went for the croque monsieur with smoked leg ham, swiss gruy?re and mustard b?chamel. I developed a bit of a thing for a jazzed up toasted cheese while I was in Oz! We shared a side salad and a pot of earl grey and were all set for a day on our feet.

Other highlights included drinks with iconic views at Opera Bar and at the top of the Shangri La hotel. The latter offers brilliant cocktails and a great system which pretty much guarantees you a seat at some point, no matter how busy things get. We only had to wait for around 20 minutes which flew by as we caught up with our friend Lex and Jane. I loved Sydney, despite the constant rain during the 3 days we were there. No beaches unfortunately, but plenty of great food and drink.

Inground Vs. Above Ground Swimming Pools- What's The Difference ...

Copyright ? 2012 savvycontent.com

Nowadays, there are a lot of types, designs, and styles of swimming pools that a person can choose from. These swimming pools range from plastic, Jacuzzi, inground, or above ground. The most common, probably, are the inground and the above ground swimming pools.

Swimming pools were said to have started in Ancient Pakistan. Back then, people called these pools baths. Those pools were covered with bricks and sealed with tar sealant, to avoid any leakage. The great bath, the first of the baths was twelve meters by seven meters in area. Swimming pools gained popularity when the Greeks and Romans used it for water sport training and recreation. Pools also doubled as fish ponds. When a Roman emperor suggested a heated swimming pool, more and more aristocrats wanted to build a heated swimming pool in their estate. It was not until the 19th century, when the British established various swimming clubs, that the swimming pool became largely popular among the masses. Since then, many have adapted swimming pools in their homes and villages.

There have always been talks about the difference between the inground and the above ground swimming pools. When a person is debating about what kind of pool he should install in his property, there are a lot of things he should consider.

First, the owner should think about the amount of space he has available for the pool. The inground pool takes more space than the above ground pool. While inground pools are permanent, once the owner gets tired of having an above ground swimming pool he can just uninstall it any time. Above ground pools are more cost-effective and budget friendly compared to the inground pool. Not only that, but some states also have laws and taxes regarding inground pools. Since the taxes are big, most families prefer the above ground pool because there are no necessary taxes that go with it.

The people who will use the pool and activities that will be done there are very important things to consider when a person is deciding the pool that he should install. Although the above ground pool is very convenient, they may not be good for swim training and other water sports. On the other hand, the inground pool need heaters because they can get cold at night, while the above ground pool does not need their water to be heated, and the need for a heater will depend on the location of the pool and how it is installed.

Do You Know What Business You're In? | Rachelle Gardner

Kodak film

What the Publishing Industry Must Learn From Kodak

Part 1 of 3

Last month one of America?s most venerable and recognizable companies, Eastman Kodak Co., filed for bankruptcy after a long, steady decline in revenue. I?ve been reading various business analysts? explanations and deconstructions of what went wrong, and all I keep thinking is, holy cow, I hope everyone in publishing is paying attention.

Writers, agents and publishers can glean lessons from the mistakes Kodak made. I?m not a business analyst, but I?ve managed to put together a list of points I think we should keep in mind, if we don?t want to go the way of Kodak. (This is the first of three posts on the topic.) Today?s focus: Knowing our business.

Herewith, the first 3 things I think we can learn from Kodak.

1. We must correctly identify the business we?re in.

Analysts seem to agree that Kodak operated as if they perceived themselves as being in the film business, long after film had been pushed out of the way in favor of digital. Even as they were rolling out new digital products, they marketed them as ways to support their film business. They continued on the idea that consumers wanted physical photos, as if ?physical photos? were the core of their business.

Back Fat and Baby Showers | Baby care | Women's health | Beauty

It had been gray and rainy for about 73 straight days here in Steamboat last spring and everyone was little cranky. It?s like living inside Tupperware. I was fixing to turn 55 in a month and that retirement organization that shall remain nameless was hunting me down like a wounded deer. I still get my period but I have the enlarged middle of a matron along with chicken skin and back fat. When I walk the dog in the park I think people take pity on me when they smile, like ?Oh geez, her life?s going down the toilet.?

So I foolishly decided to try to talk to my hubby about my existential anxiety which is the kind of stupid decision a gal makes after 73 days of rain. The car is always a good place to talk because it?s like we have them hostage. I did that with my boys, teaching them to drive. ?You need a licensed driver, son. Your butt is mine.? As they white-knuckled their way through stop signs, I?d be having the ?sex talk? exhorting them to ?Always put a helmet on that soldier!? and such. They were a hostile but captive audience, like any guy in a car, so I decided to broach my crankiness with Bob when we were pulling out of a parking lot in town.

?I?m really feeling kinda blue,? I said softly, ?You know, not really like myself.?

?They shouldn?t allow left turns out of this parking lot,? he responded.

Mother of God, what was I thinking?

I recounted the story later that day at a baby shower, sitting on a couch eating avocado chocolate mousse with my girlfriend homies from the hospital.

?Phyllis you dumb ass,? Martha said, ?You should have used the phrase ?blow job? in that sentence. As in ?I?m depressed, want a blow job?? He?d a heard you, trust me.?

?Damn right,? Betsy chirped in, ?He?d be like ?Oh yeah, depressed huh? This?ll make you feel better.?

Dang, it?s like men go to Knucklehead School at night and all learn the same stuff. When I was walking through the villages of Nepal the men would be outside their huts, laughing and smoking while the women slaved in the fields and carried huge loads of stuff around. So, my informal anthropological research shows that male blindness is a cross-cultural phenomenon.

What to do about the blue, about back fat, Bob?s male brain, my endlessly functioning uterus? I don?t drink, but I probably should. I pretty much stopped in my 20s because I?m a happy stupid dancing drunk ? cheap to boot ? and will gladly jump up on a table to shake my money-maker at a moment?s notice. Some inhibitions are good, like keeping your shirt on in public, but there are days I miss how much fun it could be to just be an idiot.

When I was very young and married to Husband #1 he was in the Lion?s Club ? you know, the old age crowd that does good things and wears funny hats. Well, I was 23 and had to be a ?Lion Tamer? when I went to their dinners and really, heavy drinking or suicide was the only way out. We even went on a Lion?s Romp to the Poconos one weekend and of course the old people didn?t want to ski or anything so I got loaded. That night, at the Lion?s Ball we sat at a table in the back when some horrible singer came on stage and everyone started talking.

?Oh, come on folks!? she chirped, ?Just give me a chance!?

It was noisy in there and I was very drunk and with the righteousness of an idiot sot I stood up, slammed both palms on the table and said in a really loud voice,

?F*** you! We don?t have to listen to this s***!?

In slow motion, 400 Lions and Lion Tamers turned around and looked at me. You could hear a pin drop in that ballroom. I swayed but held my ground. Drooled a little, probably. We were asked to leave that night, but I subsequently got invited to a lot of parties.

On the way home from the baby shower I decided to drown my sorrows in a book store. A little blue book grabbed me, titled ?F IN EXAMS: The Very Best Totally Wrong Answers.? I opened it, and soon was snorting in the aisle. Here?s an example of the biology questions and real answers from high school kids:

?What is a fibula?? A little lie.

?What is the highest frequency noise that a human voice can register?? Mariah Carey.

You get the idea. And I laughed until I hurt and people were looking at me probably with pity again; I?m sure my back fat was jiggling but it was better than any beer or bong I would have picked up in my 20s. I bought the book, went home, and the sun popped out. Me and Chopper went to the park, and all the neighborhood kids came teeming out onto the streets riding bikes and skateboards, kicking soccer balls. My neighbor, holding her one year old, waved the baby?s hand at me.

?Hey, you?re starting the garden!? I said.

?Yep,? she replied, ?The lettuce is yours for the picking.?

And that?s the way it goes, folks. The agony and the ecstasy of being a human bean. As Roseanne Roseannadana used to say: ?If it?s not one thing, it?s another.? Tupperware, left turns, girlfriends and chocolate mousse; chicken skin and kids on bikes. My neighbor offers me lettuce not yet even grown and I get to start all over again.

Night, weekend delivery OK for babies with birth defects

ScienceDaily (Feb. 10, 2012) ? Weekday delivery is no better than night or weekend delivery for infants with birth defects, according to a new study recently presented at The Pregnancy Meeting, the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine's annual conference. The finding is good news for all parties -- moms, babies and healthcare teams -- and suggests that this high-risk population of women should deliver when their bodies are ready to deliver, regardless of the day or time.

The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center, found that infants with birth defects that were delivered at night or over the weekend fared just as well as those delivered on a weekday -- they stayed at the hospital for the same amount of time, were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit at the same rate, and were given antibiotics or got help breathing just as often.

While several studies have looked at the relationship between delivery time and outcomes for healthy infants, there are no current studies on infants with birth defects. These physical abnormalities can occur in any major organ or part of the body and can profoundly influence an infant's overall health and wellbeing, but little is known about delivery time and results for infants with these problems.

"When we know that a baby will need further testing or surgical repair during the newborn period due to an identified abnormality, we typically try to arrange the delivery on a weekday," said Eva K. Pressman, M.D., professor and director of the high-risk pregnancy program at the Medical Center. "But the bottom line is that the timing of delivery isn't terribly important; if a woman goes into labor in the middle of the night or over the weekend her baby will do just as well."

Senior study author Loralei L. Thornburg, M.D., assistant professor of Maternal-Fetal Medicine in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical Center, says the data suggest that there is no reason to induce labor or perform a cesarean section in this group solely for the sake of delivering during the day, which is widely perceived as being safer for mom and baby.

"If there is no medical reason for inducing labor it is best to let the baby come on its own time, because we know elective induction is associated with negative outcomes for mom, including increased rates of cesarean delivery, greater blood loss and an extended length of stay in the hospital, and is without significant benefits for the baby," noted Thornburg.

Her team analyzed data from 220 infants with known, non-lethal birth defects that were born between 2000 and 2010. The most common abnormalities were related to the heart, such as holes between the chambers of the heart, and to the gastrointestinal system, like openings in the abdominal wall which allow the intestines to hang out. Less common problems were central nervous system, facial and musculoskeletal defects. Such irregularities are often detected by ultrasound prior to birth.

Time of delivery was divided into weekday -- 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday -- and night/weekend -- 6 p.m. to 7 a.m., Monday through Friday, or over the weekend. All infants were delivered at the University of Rochester Medical Center, which has a highly specialized neonatal intensive care unit with surgical and medical teams capable of caring for the smallest and sickest newborn babies -- the only one of its kind in the Finger Lakes Region.

For infants who required surgery after birth, the time it took to get into surgery was shorter for the day than for the night/weekend babies, but they spent the same amount of time in the hospital and there was no difference in outcomes. For just infants with gastrointestinal or cardiac defects, the time to surgery was about the same for the day and the night/weekend babies.

Weekday delivery did decrease the amount of time infants with gastrointestinal abnormalities stayed at the hospital, but did not influence overall infant outcome. Infants with cardiac abnormalities that were delivered on a weekday stayed at the hospital as long as those delivered at night or over the weekend. Overall, the rate of infant death was the same for weekday and night/weekend babies.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about one in every 33 babies is born with a birth defect.

Thornburg acknowledges that there are several limitations to the study, including its small size, retrospective nature, and the fact that it was carried out at a single institution and therefore may not be reflective of other centers across the country.

In addition to Thornburg and Pressman, Dzhamala Gilmandyar, M.D., lead study author, Brittany Paivanas, M.D., Amy Hoeft MacDonald, M.D., Oluwateniola Brown, Tina Jensen, and J. Christopher Glantz, M.D., M.P.H., all from the University of Rochester Medical Center, contributed to the research.

Deadly bird parasite evolves at exceptionally fast rate

Friday, February 10, 2012

A new study of a devastating bird disease that spread from poultry to house finches in the mid-1990s reveals that the bacteria responsible for the disease evolves at an exceptionally fast rate. What's more, the fast-evolving microbe has lost a key chunk of its genome since jumping to its new host, scientists were surprised to find. The missing portion contained the genes that made up the microbe's immune system, researchers report in the February 9th issue of PLoS Genetics.

When thousands of wild house finches started dropping dead from a mysterious eye infection in the Washington, DC, area in the winter of 1994, scientists were puzzled.

The birds had red, swollen, crusty eyes that left them unable to see or forage for food, until they eventually died from starvation or predation. Researchers soon identified the cause ? a bacterium called Mycoplasma gallisepticum, a common cause of respiratory infections in turkeys and chickens that was previously known to infect only poultry.

By the time biologist Geoff Hill spotted his first sick bird in Auburn, Alabama, in 1995, the disease had spread through the eastern part of the continent, as far north as Quebec and as far south as Florida. "This was a devastating pandemic," Hill said.

Since its discovery, the epidemic has spread as far west as California, and is estimated to have wiped out hundreds of millions of birds. But scientists are still far from understanding how Mycoplasma gallisepticum gained the ability to spread to house finches ? which diverged from chickens and turkeys some 80-90 million years ago ? or what turned it into such a sweeping killer.

In a new study in the journal PLoS Genetics, researchers compared the genomes of a dozen strains of Mycoplasma gallisepticum sampled from infected house finches between 1994-2007, in the years following the initial outbreak. Using a technique called pyrosequencing, "we can measure evolution on very short time scales," said co-author Scott Edwards of Harvard University. Instead of studying the host switch years after it happened, the researchers are able to track it in real time. "We're catching the switch in the act," he added.

In both poultry and house finches, the microbe has been evolving at frightening speed, they report. "It's evolving anywhere from ten to 100 times faster than previous estimates for any other bacterium," said Harvard graduate student and first author Nigel Delaney.

But when the researchers compared the DNA sequences of the poultry strains with those sampled from house finches, they found something surprising ? since making the switch, some parts of the parasite's genome have begun to break down.

Mycoplasma gallisepticum has a tiny genome to begin with, with less than 1000 genes, Delaney said. But rather than acquire new genes to help it outwit its new host, the parasite has gradually lost more than 50 genes ? particularly those that make up the microbe's immune system.

Mycoplasmas are parasites, but they also have parasites of their own, including naturally occurring viruses called bacteriophages. "One of the main functions [of the genes that were lost] is to help guard Mycoplasma against the attacks of bacteriophages," Edwards explained.

"It was surprising to see a part of the genome that was assumed to be so important suddenly become unimportant," Delaney added.

It seems crazy, but "scientists have seen the same phenomenon before in HIV," said co-author Allen Rodrigo of the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center in Durham, North Carolina. When HIV infects a new host, it doesn't encounter the same threats, so it loses the specific immune defenses that protected it in its former host, Rodrigo explained. These original defenses may be expensive to maintain, Rodrigo said. Studies show that the HIV strains that lose them are able to reproduce more quickly and spread.

"It's similar to the 'use it or lose it' principle," Edwards added.

Mycoplasma gallisepticum can't be transmitted to humans. It can infect other backyard birds ?including American goldfinches, purple finches, evening grosbeaks and pine grosbeaks ? but none with the devastating consequences like those seen in house finches.

Researchers still don't know which genetic changes enabled the pathogen to reach epidemic proportions in house finches. But if the house finch strains have lost the genetic machinery that protected them in poultry, then reintroducing the parasites to the bacteriophages of their former hosts could be one way to control the disease, the scientists say.

Determining which specific bacteriophages those are, and whether the remnants of the Mycoplasma immune system still provide some protection against them, will take much more work.

"But this study shows that there's a third player that's important to understand this pandemic, which are the bacteriophages. Nobody's looked at that so far. This is the first observation that they seem to matter," Delaney said.

Britain's media ethics inquiry: the story so far (omg!)

FILE - A Monday Nov. 21, 2011 photo from files showing British actor Hugh Grant arriving to give evidence at the the Leveson inquiry in London. J.K Rowling described how press intrusion made her feel like a hostage, Hugh Grant traded insults with a newspaper editor and a former tabloid reporter insisted that only evildoers had any need of privacy. LONDON (AP) ? J.K. Rowling described how press intrusion made her feel like a hostage, Hugh Grant traded insults with a newspaper editor and a former tabloid reporter insisted that only evildoers had any need of privacy.

The first phase of Britain's media ethics inquiry ended this week after 40 days of dramatic hearings that heard from 184 witnesses ? celebrities, journalists, editors, academics and lawyers ? and revealed wildly differing perspectives on the murky workings of the tabloid press.

Prime Minister David Cameron set up the inquiry, led by Lord Justice Brian Leveson, in response to a scandal that began with illegal eavesdropping by Rupert Murdoch's News of the World. Murdoch shut down the 168-year-old tabloid in July after evidence emerged that it had accessed the mobile phone voicemails of celebrities, politicians and even crime victims in its search for scoops.

The first section of the inquiry looked at the culture, practices and ethics of the British press.

Here's what we've learned so far:

PHONE HACKING WAS JUST ONE FORM OF WRONGDOING ? AND THE NEWS OF THE WORLD WASN'T THE ONLY PERPETRATOR

As the inquiry opened, victims' lawyer David Sherborne said it was not just the disgraced News of the World, but "the whole of the press, and in particular the tabloid section of it, which we say stands in the dock."

Illegal eavesdropping was just one of the improper techniques of which papers stood accused. Celebrities ? and non-celebrities thrust into the spotlight ? described paparazzi stakeouts, late-night pursuits and relentless attention that left them angry and paranoid.

Hugh Grant testified his apartment had been broken into, details of a hospital visit leaked and the mother of his baby daughter hounded by paparazzi. He accused the Mail on Sunday of hacking his phone ("A mendacious smear," countered Paul Dacre, editor of sister paper the Daily Mail).

Singer Charlotte, Church, the subject of intense media interest from childhood, said her mother had attempted suicide partly as a result of a News of the World story about her father's extramarital affair headlined "Church's three in a bed cocaine shock."

Journalism professor and former tabloid editor Roy Greenslade said that even for newspaper veterans, the daily accumulation of evidence had been startling.

"I think all of us who have worked in popular newspapers were not massively surprised but there were, even so, eye-opening moments ? harassment of people, pursuit of people and intrusions into their private lives," he said.

As for phone hacking, other newspapers were accused ? but without firm proof. Daily Mirror editor Richard Wallace said hacking "might well" have been going on at the Mirror in the early 2000s, though CNN celebrity interviewer Piers Morgan said he didn't believe he had ever listened to hacked voicemail messages while he was editor between 1995 and 2004.

But he offered no explanation for how he heard a voicemail message left by former Beatle Paul McCartney for his then-girlfriend, Heather Mills.

JOURNALISTS AND CELEBRITIES HAVE VERY DIFFERENT IDEAS OF PRIVACY

Celebrity witnesses expressed outrage that fame made every aspect of their private lives fair game for the press. Rowling said the tabloids' attitude was: "You're famous, you're asking for it." The press camped on her doorstep, phoned her husband pretending to be tax collectors, even slipped a note into her 5-year-old daughter's schoolbag.

"I felt such a sense of invasion," Rowling said. "(It was) like being under siege and like being a hostage."

Others described a similar sense of violation.

But representatives of the tabloid press saw it differently ? as a codependent relationship involving attention-starved celebrities and story-seeking journalists.

The Daily Mail's Dacre said that "a lot of celebrities, celebrity chefs, sportspeople make a lot of money by revealing their lives to the public. I believe newspapers should be given some latitude to look into their lives when they err."

Former News of the World reporter Paul McMullan put it more bluntly: "The only people I think need privacy are people who do bad things," he said. "Privacy is evil."

THE SCANDAL HAS TAMED THE TABLOID PRESS, AT LEAST TEMPORARILY

The inquiry was triggered by widespread revulsion in July when the public learned about the hacking of the phone of Milly Dowler, a 13-year-old girl who was abducted and murdered in 2002.

Since then, Britain's rambunctious tabloids have been noticeably more muted, running few of the exposes of celebrity sex-and-drug scandal that were long their trademark. It seems editors are running scared.

Celebrity publicist Max Clifford ? who pocketed nearly 1 million pounds ($1.58 million) of Murdoch's money when his own hacking case was settled ? told the inquiry that in the last few months "there are several major stories that would have dominated the headlines ... that haven't come out."

THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN, BUT THERE'S LITTLE AGREEMENT ABOUT HOW TO FIX IT

Almost every witness agreed that the current system of newspaper self-regulation through the Press Complaints Commission does not work.

The commission can impose penalties and order apologies in response to complaints about stories ? but it has no legal powers, membership is voluntary and it is composed mainly of newspaper editors.

Sherborne, the hacking victims' lawyer, said that the current setup was "tantamount to handing the police station over to the mafia," and victims have called for stronger ? if often undefined ? measures to curb wayward journalists.

But journalists and newspaper editors fear such pressure could lead to some form of state regulation of the media. They would prefer to see a new independent regulator with stronger powers.

Financial Times editor Lionel Barber told the inquiry that the current PCC code "is pretty robust but it needs to be enforced and it needs to be credible."

He stressed, however, that the press must remain independent ? "We will make mistakes and reputations may be damaged, but the principle of free expression is really critical."

NEWS CORP. IS SORRY ? AND HAS DEEP POCKETS WHEN IT COMES TO COMPENSATING VICTIMS

The phone hacking scandal has rocked Rupert Murdoch's global News Corp. which has made strenuous public efforts to salvage its reputation.

The company has paid damages to settle lawsuits by about 60 people, including many of the inquiry's witnesses. Each settlement came with an apology in court for the damage and distress the illegal activity had caused.

The company has established a standards and ethics committee to root out wrongdoing, set aside a 20 million pound ($32 million) fund to compensate victims and has already paid out several million, including 2 million pounds to the Dowler family.

This week News Corp. revealed that the hacking scandal has cost it $87 million, most of it in legal fees.

And the story is far from over. About 60 more hacking lawsuits are being prepared.

The Leveson Inquiry has many more months of testimony in store. The second phase of hearings, looking at the media's relationship with the police, opens Feb. 27.

Gavaskar inducted into ICC Cricket Hall of Fame

Dubai, Feb 9

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar was inducted into the International Cricket Council (ICC) Hall of Fame in Dubai, receiving his commemorative cap from fellow Hall of Famer and team-mate Kapil Dev.

Gavaskar is one of the initial 55 inductees in the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame which was launched in January 2009 in association with the Federation of International Cricketers? Associations (FICA) as part of the ICC?s Centenary Year. He now joins a club that includes 72 male and female cricketers.

In the presence of ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat and former Pakistan captains Aamir Sohail, Ramiz Raja and Waqar Younis, Gavaskar accepted the cap from Dev in front of a select gathering Wednesday.

One of the game?s greatest opening batsmen, Gavaskar represented India in 125 Test matches, captaining in 47 of those games, and also played in 108 ODIs. During an illustrious 16-year career spanning from 1971 to 1987, the 62-year-old scored 10,122 Test runs at an average of 51.12. He also scored 3,092 ODI runs with his only century coming in the 1987 World Cup against New Zealand in Nagpur.

He was also a member of the India squad that won the 1983 World Cup in England, defeating the West Indies by 43 runs.

Gavaskar is the first Test batsman to complete 10,000 runs and also the first to score 30 Test centuries, achieving the feat against Pakistan during the 1986-87 Test series and against the West Indies in Chennai during the 1983-84 Test series, respectively.

Gavaskar was delighted to receive the cap.

?It is a huge honour because it is the peers in the game who decide who is going to be inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame. It has taken some time to co-ordinate the presentation but finally it is there and I am delighted that I have been inducted," he said in an ICC release.

Gavaskar was thrilled to receive the cap from Dev who was his captain in the 1983 triumph.
